📢 The Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative’s latest report spotlights Building Markets' work supporting Syrian refugee entrepreneurs in Türkiye. The report notes the significant language barriers these entrepreneurs face, which limit access to critical information on financial opportunities, laws, and regulations. To address this, we integrate laws and regulations into our mentoring services. Our support also includes matchmaking events that connect Syrian refugee and Turkish host community SMEs, enabling them to showcase their products, expand their networks, and unlock new business partnerships. Learn more about how our market systems approaches can catalyze self-reliance for forcibly displaced populations and their host communities. It was such a pleasure to speak at the Global Youth Economic Opportunities Summit last week and I couldn’t sum up the key takeaway better than Ishimwe Shem Vanessa did: investing in refugees and refugee-led initiatives creates lasting change. At Building Markets, we know that access to markets is a critical component for refugee-led businesses to find success, and we’re excited to partner with others invested in strengthening the ecosystem of small business support so that more refugees can build sustainable livelihoods. Thank you, Making Cents International for organizing!
I had the immense privilege to attend Global Youth Economic Opportunities Summit last week with the theme: Youth driving the green economy. You needed to be there. I loved hearing from different stakeholders working in the “youth” space, and I was particularly captivated by the side event and panel led by World University Service of Canada (WUSC - EUMC) which talked about disrupting social norms for economic opportunities and building youth economic opportunities pathways with and for refugees, respectively. Being a refugee or a displaced person comes with its “socio-economic norms/barriers” that make it hard for the refugee youth to participate in and/or lead economic development. Yet, who is better equipped to lead the change of one’s reality than oneself? The panel discussion spotlighted members of the Youth Advisory Committee for WUSC and Mastercard Foundation‘s DREEM project, Bior Ajak and Solange Ingabire, who educated and reminded us (the world) of the challenges faced by refugees and the great opportunity that lies in investing in refugees and refugee-led initiatives to create lasting change. Even more excitingly the panel featured Lauren Post Thomas from Conrad N. Hilton Foundation who shared the incredible work they are doing by investing directly in local and refugee-led organizations-work that I have witnessed, and Elizabeth Brown from Building Markets who shared about their work in linking suppliers to markets, a cause I believe is crucial for achieving self-reliance for refugees the youth in general. Conversations like this which highlight the challenge and showcase the lived experience, expertise, evidence and innovation, remind me that we are one step closer to creating sustainable and more permanent solutions for refugees. With all that said, special thanks to Making Cents International for providing such a platform for stakeholders to exchange experiences and forge collaborations that become a force for good.

Closing out a whirlwind week in Hong Kong for the The Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Philanthropy conference on Philanthropy for Better Cities, and Foundations Circle. I learned so much from the Asian philanthropists who attended. For instance, did you know that the The Hong Kong Jockey Club is the 15 biggest foundation in the world? I’ve been in this business a long time and it was wonderful to expand my own understanding of philanthropy in the most populous part of the world. And of course, to share insights on impact measurement, supply chain strengthening and markets. Thanks to Gabriel Leung and team for wonderful hospitality, and I look forward to continued collaboration. Building Markets

Kudos! This is an amazing win for Unlock Aid, the social innovation and evidence-to-impact community. 🎉💪🏽🎉 I’m delighted to see social impact, evidence and cost-effectiveness at the center of these reforms. Aid budgets are too precious to spend without holding true to innovation, strong results and the best use of resources. USAID has a chance to offer leadership through its budget and its collective learning. I look forward to the State Department and other USG agencies following suit.
📣 Big news for social innovators! 🌏 The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee just passed a bill with exciting updates and funding for the future of global development. Highlights include: 🚀 New funding to scale proven solutions to help address the 'missing middle' of global development spending 💡 A 25% budget boost for USAID's Development Innovation Ventures (DIV) office ✂ Simplified procurement processes making it easier to apply for funding and manage grants 💵 Cost-effectiveness benchmarks to help design future development programs 🌐 Increased support for local organizations and innovation-enabling infrastructure, like $65M for a Digital Transformation with Africa Fund This work is only made possible through the support and energy of our community. Thank you for everything you do! https://lnkd.in/gGfGqBib #innovation #globaldevelopment #SDGs
