HR Leaders: We need to talk about AI again…yes again. If you haven't yet formulated a worldview and professional perspective on AI and how it will impact your function and your role as a leader, now’s the time. In this recent, thought-provoking article by Josh Bersin, he sketches what’s next for "the next big thing." He looks forward to the not-so-distant-future where AI is enabling actions that complete day-to-day tasks without human prompts. The term used to describe this shift is “Agentic AI” -- as in AI agents acting as e-assistants and having agency to complete tasks on their own, without human direction. In fact, he discusses the idea of treating these new agents as another employee to onboard and coach to improve their performance then add to the org chart. I'll be honest with you, this idea caused a visceral reaction inside of me. It struck a nerve deep in the soul of my humanity. My fight-or-flight response immediately engaged in a defensive mode. And I understood something from this response. This is why it’s critical for all leaders, and especially HR leaders, to formulate a worldview and professional perspective on AI because we need to influence how this “next big thing” is applied in the world of work. We need to be the voice of the human employee, leading with values and integrity as we look through the lens of what’s next. I’m still processing how this will impact my company, but I do know this will not alter our mission or values -- rather, it will prop up our purpose which is to serve others. I am not a futurist or a technologist, but I am a fan of innovation, and this is exciting when I think of the possibilities of enablement and efficiencies. And when I look at AI I see two world views: WALL-E or The Jetsons. For me, WALL-E is the scariest movie ever made, a story where robots save humanity from its own destruction, including AI gone bad. Whereas The Jetsons show the enablement and efficiency of technology used in everyday human life that is centered around the principle of what it is to be human. My world view aligns with The Jetsons -- this is what I envision for the future, and WALL-E is the threat. What is your world view? Please comment below.
