Congratulations to the City of Columbus, Nebraska, BVH Architecture, Confluence, and Boyd Jones Construction for winning the 2024 IES Illumination Merit Award! The Columbus Community Building in rural Nebraska is a 78,000 ft facility that houses the public library, city hall, and children's museum. It promotes a forward-thinking way of combining local services and ensures everyone can access fair and equal services enriched by human connection. The cantilevered architectural design symbolizes welcomeness and inclusivity, with lighting that creates a warm glow at night to encourage use and establish a sense of safety. The lighting design prioritizes visual comfort, minimizes light pollution, and utilizes LED sources for reduced energy consumption. The building transcends its role as a physical structure, offering elevated public services, fostering early literacy, stimulating economic development, and positioning itself as a magnet for new talent.

We are incredibly proud to share that the Columbus Community Building was selected as the Award of Merit recipient in the 2024 ENR Midwest- Government/Public Building category. This transformative project was among the first of its kind in Nebraska, bringing essential services, including the library, children’s museum, city hall, and more, into a central hub under one roof. The new facility, a testament to the City’s vision and commitment, seamlessly integrates functionality and community connection, providing a space where residents can gather and engage with amenities that foster lifelong learning and ongoing support. The entire project team was essential in bringing this innovative and impactful project to life, and we are excited to see how it will continue to benefit the community for decades to come.
