EPISODE 17 | Women's Contributions To Our National Defense This episode is all about the many contributions women have made to our national defense and how the military services are changing to better leverage the full talents of the American people. Leading off, Joe speaks with U.S. Marine Corps attack helicopter pilot and combat veteran, Katey van Dam (1:33). Katey deployed in support of combat operations in Afghanistan and counter-piracy operations in the Horn of Africa/Gulf of Aden. She also co-founded No Exceptions, an initiative that led the effort to get the Department of Defense to allow women to compete for jobs in the infantry, artillery, tanks, combat engineers and other previously closed military occupational specialties (MOSs). Next, Ellen chats with Army veteran Phyllis Wilson (14:05) who served 37 years in the Army as a Military Intelligence Voice Intercept Operator. Phyllis has served around the globe and has deployed to Iraq several times as an Intelligence Analyst with Special Ops. She now leads the efforts of the Military Women's Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery - whose mission is to capture and tell the stories of the many women who have defended our country. Lastly, Lindsay Knight (43:15) of Blue Star Families joins us for a discussion on what her organization is doing to strengthen the military community. GUESTS Kate van Dam - Co-founder of No Exceptions Phyllis Wilson, MPA, BSN, RN - President of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation Lindsay Knight, PhD - Chief Impact Officer of Blue Star Families ABOUT VETTED CONVERSATIONS Vetted Conversations is a podcast to help Americans - especially the veteran community - better understand their rights and responsibilities as citizens and how they can get involved to reinforce our constitutional republic and representative democracy. What an unforgettable evening for our #BlueStarFamilies Sheila and George Casey National Capital Region! The NCR Cultivation event was a true celebration, brimming with connections and heartfelt moments among our supporters and partners. Kicking off the festivities, we were treated to an incredible performance by the Alexandria Harmonizers, setting the perfect tone for the night. During Blue Star Welcome Week, our friends Starbucks helped us host more than 100 events across the country to help military families feel welcome in their new communities. It may seem like a simple cup of coffee, but it's so much more than that — Blue Star Families Coffee Connects bring people together, fostering community and connection. Thank you, Starbucks, for doing your part for military families. Whether welcoming thousands of military families or inviting a neighbor to connect over coffee, everyone can do their part! #DoYourPart is made possible by the generous support of Craig Newmark and Craig Newmark Philanthropies. From the Legoland Discovery Centers all over the country, Caregiver Bingo in Ohio, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Nashville, scavenger hunts around the White House, Coffee Connects and school events all across the country, it was heartwarming to see so many families connecting, sharing stories, and creating new friendships. #BlueStarFamilies is incredibly grateful to see leaders like Bill Ford and companies like Ford Motor Company stepping up to support military families and veterans. The Ford Bronco Off-Roadeo event is a shining example of how we can honor those who have served our country by giving back in meaningful ways. Thank you for making a real difference!
Yesterday I had the chance to join members of the Veteran and military community, including Ford Veteran employees, at the Proud to Honor Bronco Off-Roadeo in Horseshoe Bay, TX. Ford Motor Company has a long history of supporting the military community. It is our responsibility as a great American company to do our part serving those who have done so much to serve our country. That’s why we hosted members of the veteran and military community at our Bronco off-roading school outside Austin, TX. Thank you Blue Star Families, DAV (Disabled American Veterans), Elizabeth Dole Foundation, Guitars For Vets, Inc., The Saber Six Foundation, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, Team Rubicon, Travis Manion Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for joining us. And thank you to Horseshoe Bay Resort for your generous support. My hope is that by experiencing the outdoors and off roading together, members of this deserving community can build camaraderie, connections and experience joy.

Meet Ashley—a proud combat veteran, military spouse, and mom of two boys. Raised as a military brat in Germany and Turkey, she followed her parent's path, becoming a #MarineCorps Logistics Officer and leading convoys in Afghanistan. Today, she supports her husband's active-duty career and works at Blue Star Families to help military and veteran families like yours. Service is in her blood. But, like many, she hesitates to recommend the military to her kids. Why? The constant moves, unpredictable schedules, and time apart take their toll. When we shared this with Ford Motor Company they asked, "How can we help?" The Ford Proud to Honor: Bronco Off-Roadeo Experience was born. Thanks to Horseshoe Bay Resort's support, Ashley joined participants from Blue Star Families, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, Travis Manion Foundation, Guitars For Vets, Inc., Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and DAV (Disabled American Veterans) to foster community and connection. We must work together—communities, businesses, and neighbors—so that recruiting remains strong and service continues to inspire pride. Here's how we're encouraging brands like Ford to #DoYourPart: -Understand the military family experience -Support local military-connected organizations -Become a military-friendly business -Simply say "hi" to a military neighbor Thank you, Ford, for your long-standing support of our military and for being an outstanding Blue Star Partner. Your support is deeply appreciated and makes a significant difference. #FordProudToHonor Bill Ford
