The NASA MSI Incubator Wildfire Climate Tech Challenge is a competition where innovation meets impact 🎤 In this Challenge, NASA invited students and employees of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) to address the escalating issues caused by wildfires exacerbated by climate change. Semi-finalists received participation in the NASA I-Corps and finalists won participation in a startup incubator program and a prize of $100,000. “When I thought about going to NASA headquarters in DC, I was speechless at first,” says Sofia Silva, ’24 Software Engineering, one of the leads of the Project Firewatch team. “I didn't know what to think. It's surreal that it all happened in the first place.” Their idea, a drone that used wildfire trajectory software to help track and disseminate information about where a fire might be going next, started as a senior design project and led them to a second-place finish for best new innovation out of 147 teams (and a cash prize) at the Silicon Valley Innovation Challenge (SVIC). This gave them a chance to present their work at NASA headquarters, where they were runner-up in the NASA Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Wildfire Climate Tech Challenge. Now they hope to reach more people with their product.
