We wanted to help the Kids' Food Basket reach their goal of 100,000 decorated bags during the month of October, so the Bloom girls took the morning to have some fun and give back. Sack Suppers are nutritious, ready-to-eat evening meals delivered right to a child’s school or distribution site. These meals ensure children have access to the healthy food they need to thrive. We can take this one step further through bag decorating, adding a colorful reminder that the community cares. We hope our decorated bags bring smiles to kids. 😊 #KFBengage

Check out one of the patient stories Kirsten wrote for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month at Helen DeVos Children's Hospital!💛
Who is brave, mighty, and goofy all at the same time? Thor.😊 He's one of the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital patients I spotlighted for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Amidst some of his sick days, he chose laughter as his best medicine. He played (safe) pranks on his care team - one being setting his room up like it was the Home Alone house equipped with Nerf guns, fake poop, and more. I enjoyed getting to know him and his family; it was an honor to tell his story. This past week, we filmed a video of him interviewing his doctor. It was so cute! Stay tuned for that. 🔽🔽🔽 In October 2022, Thor Alford was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. His parents and care team opted for inpatient chemotherapy separated by short recovery breaks. Throughout treatment, Thor experienced long stays in the hospital, bone marrow biopsies, blood transfusions, heart complications, RSV and more. “We are so thankful to have a top-class hospital right here in Grand Rapids. Despite the terrible circumstances that brought us to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, the entire care team was incredibly understanding and knowledgeable. We were confident our child was receiving high quality care and the best treatment,” his Mom Kristen said. Thor is talkative, funny, energetic and smart. He felt good during most of his treatment, so his care team enjoyed keeping him entertained. “They found ways to keep him moving, such as running laps, doing scavenger hunts, riding a big wheel, and more,” Kristen said. The team also made sure to accommodate Thor’s parents while they worked remotely from the hospital. “They made sure we had room set-ups that accommodated our work needs and chairs that were a bit more comfortable for sitting at a 'desk' all day.” After finishing his fifth round in May 2023, Thor visits monthly for follow up visits. “Thor is doing really well. At his last checkup all his counts were in the normal range,” Kristen said.
