When I first walked this project in early 2021, I thought we were in over our heads but we were in a pandemic and office projects were slowing down, so the opportunity to diversify into multi-family projects sounded enticing. We began working with Eugene and his team from KA Enterprises to develop a budget and schedule based on all the work needed to completely modernize this 47 unit apartment building built in 1970. As a former CM for a property owner, it was a pleasure watching Eugene diligently navigate his way with existing tenants, city officials, property managers and all of the unknowns that occurred along the way. Needless to say, we finished our first apartment renovation project last month and if anyone is looking for a nice apartment to lease in North Park, reach out to Eugene Marini. "KA Enterprises brought on Black Diamond Construction to handle a big exterior renovation job for a 47-unit apartment project in North Park, San Diego. To say that working with Black Diamond was key to the project's success would be an understatement. They were extremely professional, patient, diligently explained the process and executed on the challenging business plan."   -Eugene Marini – Director of Acquisitions / Asset Management

Just 45 minutes south of US/Mex border, nestled in the eastern Tijuana hills near Tecate, families are living in extreme poverty under poorly built shelters. I’m extremely honored to have led 21 Baja Challenge Teams this past Saturday to Colonia Riconcito, to build new homes for these less fortunate families. When I was walking the sites a few months ago, I came across a little boy, Jose, who was walking toward his house with a bag of tortillas he said was his family’s lunch. His mother, Jazmin, explained how they had to move their house to the top of the hill so they can grade their site to fit the slab for their new house. The kids kept falling down the tire stairs and hurting themselves, so I immediately paid a local framer to build them some new wooden stairs. I was so taken aback by their struggles and the look of desperation in Jazmin’s eyes that I knew this was the family I wanted to build a house for. I’m very proud of my Black Diamond Construction team and friends that came down to help build a house for the Avila family. Steve Davis was instrumental in our success and I'm extremely thankful for his framing skills and brute strength he brought to the build. We all worked our asses off in the heat and kept hammering away until the job was done. Needless to say, emotions were high when we handed the keys to Mario and watching the kids play in their new home is what brings me back each year. Thanks to Community Devlopment Projects Inc. dba Project Mercy Baja for all you do to support Baja Challenge and all of our volunteers.
