The first 20 years of my professional life were spent as an academic vascular surgeon. I was struck in those years by the overhang of anecdotal approaches vs. disciplined trials in my specialty, the poor choice of endpoints in those trials that were conducted, and the lack of true quality tracking of outcomes. It all began to change during my years in surgery and during the beginnings of the endovascular revolution largely at the initiative of many of my vascular colleagues who fought hard to ensure that the newness of technology alone was not the precipitant of broad-based adoption. It is excellent to see the fruits of the labors of those early investigators who heralded the bioresorbable stent approach and also the discipline and accountability that have infused the field of medical devices broadly and vascular disease specifically over these last two decades. Excellent editorial supporting a great publication.

It was a wonderful two days in New York at the Nordic American Healthcare Conference. With our Partners at DNB we heard from exciting emerging and large companies, deeply thoughtful panels, and had dialogues ranging from the challenges of delivering healthcare properly, thanks to the extraordinary expertise and knowledge of our keynote speaker, MGPO President Marcela del Carmen MD, to the challenges and opportunities in the public markets, M&A, partnering, and licensing dynamics in the current era, technology integration for integrated care delivery, and the twists and turns of drug development. In every challenge lies great opportunity - from the system-wide impact of Healthcare IT to the specific biologic and clinical demands of neurology, oncology, transplant, inflammation, cardiac disease, obesity and metabolism and more. Yet again the Nordics proved to be the purveyors of thought and expertise and once again the power of cross-border exchange of information and dedication to healthcare showed itself to be among our most powerful tools.
