MILESTONES…HOPE…GLOBAL GENES… Today is a milestone. 8 years ago today our daughter Megan began her first infusion on a then experimental next generation enzyme replacement therapy for her Pompe disease. (In this picture I had just pressed the button to begin the IV flow). We had worked many years since Megan received her first infusion of the first drug that saved her life back in 2003 to try to create a newer and better medicine. By this time 13+ years later in 2016 after that first life saving medicine, Megan was struggling physically again. It was during her sophomore year at Notre Dame. She and others with Pompe needed something new. Pressing that IV button 8 years ago to “start” the flow was the moment that hope turned into reality. Megan strengthened greatly in the months ahead and was able to complete her studies at Notre Dame on time and with a double major. Today, I am in Kansas City and was honored to deliver the opening keynote address and fireside chat here at the annual Global Genes patient conference, which brings together 500+ passionate leaders in the rare disease community. Being in Kansas City, the theme of the conference this year is aptly titled “there’s no place like hope.” We need to accelerate a great sense of urgency to advance newer and better medicines and technologies, to create a vibrant biotechnology ecosystem with patients, caregivers and their families at the center of all that we do. And patient advocates increasingly spearheading the work that we do. And to turn hope into reality for all. The days of a physician telling parents on the day of diagnosis that “I’m sorry, there is nothing we can do…” is simply no longer acceptable. So we are at this crossroads. And a time of choosing. And we choose passion, hope- and action. So many other families need to press that IV button now for their disorders as well…time is of the essence.
