I am delighted to recount my enriching participation in the NCBI BioEd Summit: Crafting Student-Centric Curricula at the NIH Campus in Bethesda from August 5 to 9, 2024. I engaged in insightful discussions and acquired valuable knowledge! A special acknowledgment goes to Rana Morris, Alexa Salsbury, PhD, E. Sally Chang and Kalei Malczon-Dorris for their significant contributions! Interacting, collaborating, and exchanging scientific ideas with approximately 30 teachers from high schools, community colleges, undergraduate institutions across the USA, and professionals dedicated to advancing biology education was a pleasure. One standout moment was the captivating Panel Discussion on Modern Biology Education - Novel Pedagogy and Active Learning in Practice. The panel featured representatives from various institutions, including NIH, NSF and HHMI exploring diverse approaches to integrating cutting-edge data science and bioinformatics topics into student-focused curricula at various educational institutions. I am enthusiastic about applying the valuable insights and knowledge from the summit to my work at Massachusetts Bay Community College. I eagerly anticipate implementing these learnings to enhance the student-centric approach to biotechnology education. “Engaging Massachusetts high school students is a key strategy for the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center as we aim to develop students’ interests and skillsets, increase awareness of life sciences careers, and build a diverse STEM workforce pipeline.” – MLSC Vice President of Education and Workforce Programs Ryan Mudawar Getting an early start in a field can shape a person’s path in life. That’s the premise of MeDHigh, a Worcester Polytechnic Institute summer program that hosted seven high school students from Worcester for four weeks in June and July. The program, made possible by $100,000 in MLSC funding, seeks to encourage high school students — including those from groups that are underrepresented in the life sciences industry – to consider STEM education and careers. The stories we hear from ABE teachers provide the "why" behind everything we do to bring ABE to sites around the world.
