Exciting news! The Senate has unanimously passed, and the House has introduced, the Big Brothers Big Sisters 120th Anniversary Resolution, thanks to Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Todd Young (R-IN), and Representatives Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) and Mark Amodei (R-NV). This bipartisan resolution recognizes BBBS's 120 years of mentoring impact, highlights mentorship's transformative power, and supports our program expansion. Starting college can be a whirlwind of uncertainty. For Mark W. Halastik, MSW, his journey at University of Missouri-Kansas City was transformed by two incredible mentors who made a lasting impact. "I had several memorable experiences at UMKC, particularly as a French student. There is immeasurable power in foreign language learning and its positive impact on a person’s life. For me, studying French was not just a requirement for my bachelor’s degree – it became a part of my identity. Today, I am proud to honor Professors Levy Gayle and Kathy Krause as mentors who continue inspiring me. Their passion for the French language – and their commitment to helping students learn – made me a better writer and communicator, and ultimately prepared me for success in the future. As a first-generation college student, I did not know what to expect at UMKC. It took some time to “find my way”. However, as I progressed through the French program, they pushed me to apply myself (even when I didn't know I needed to be pushed!). They held me accountable AND encouraged me to think critically, helping me succeed through the remainder of my coursework, then transition to my nonprofit career. It has been a privilege to learn from these two distinguished professors AND remain connected with them beyond college. Now, with writing, editing, and research as primary components of my work, their strong influence remains with me every day. Thank you, Dr. Levy and Dr. Krause, for making such a tremendous impact on my life. I remain grateful for your mentorship, now and forever." BBBSEMO is fortunate to have passionate staff like Mark and passionate volunteers and partners. Do you want to learn more about how you make a difference as a mentor or partner with BBBSEMO?
