"The opposite of a fact is a falsehood. The opposite of a profound truth is another profound truth." Quantum physicist and Nobel Prize Winner Niels Bohr shared this lesson with his son, a lesson he'd learned from waves and particles that applied equally to humans. On any given day, working professionals hold many paradoxical and profound truths, about ourselves; our companies; our colleagues; and our world. The weight of this cognitive dissonance grows heavier in spiking moments of political polarization. How can we hold all of it, and remain productive, this election season? This week I spoke to Emily Graffeo and Tim Stenovec at Bloomberg Television about our research on politically polarizing moments at work, sharing BetterUp Labs' insights with viewers and listeners seeking a path to equilibrium. You can listen to my interview at the 22:15 mark here: https://lnkd.in/gRX6TTYs Thanks Emily and Tim for the engaging conversation! I was also able to share our take on the business case for caring about this issue as a member of the Forbes Technology Council. https://lnkd.in/g3xnRHd3 It turns out this issue is not only uncomfortable, it's expensive. I'll share more posts here on LinkedIn as we release more of the research. I also hope to learn from everyone reading and listening as we get smarter together about leading teams and organizations in increasingly polarized times.

According to the 2024 Women in the Workplace Report by McKinsey & Company and the Lean In Organization, younger women are 3x more likely than younger men to observe microaggressions against women. What can leaders do to create a more inclusive and equitable workplace experience for all and mitigate microaggressions in the workplace? 1️⃣ Invest in developing inclusive leaders. According to BetterUp data, we’ve found that employees with inclusive leaders are 50% more productive, 90% more innovative, and 150% more engaged. Inclusive leadership also results in 54% lower employee turnover. 2️⃣ Foster a culture of feedback. Give people the space and psychological safety to share — and receive — meaningful feedback. Ensure your managers are listening to employees’ feedback and making changes, especially when it comes to interpersonal conflict. 3️⃣ Speak up.  If you witness a microaggression, speak up. Your leadership is critical to mitigating the impact of microaggressions in the workforce and can help promote belonging, productivity, and performance. Three words no one wants to hear: “You have cancer.” I was meeting my new team at BetterUp in person for the first time when I got the news. Navigating a deeply emotional and personal diagnosis is difficult; navigating it in the workplace is something else altogether. I understand why nearly a quarter of women with cancer decide not to share their diagnosis with their colleagues. Today, I’m cancer-free—early detection truly saved my life. I’m grateful for the friendship that came when my colleagues at BetterUp created space for me to be real with them. We don’t often talk about the hardest things in our lives at work, but when we do, we are rewarded with the thing that matters most in this sometimes too short life: deep connection. In this Fast Company, I had the privilege of reflecting on my own personal experience of living and working with breast cancer—and I’ve compiled a few thoughts on the dos and don’ts of supporting a colleague with cancer. Thanks for reading. https://lnkd.in/dt5d-NXh #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth #breasthealth #breastcancerawareness #breastcancersupport #breastcancertreatment #fightbreastcancer #PinkOctober #pinktober #thinkpink #womenshealth
