Once again, the news is devastating. Violence against the vulnerable makes us weep, mourn, and cry out for mercy. It doesn't have to be this way. We lament. We commit to take action for a more peaceful and just world where all can flourish and live in true freedom. We are grateful for Kayla Craig and the prayers in To Light Their Way. August 28th is a significant day in history. ▪️ The North African theologian, Augustine of Hippo, died at age 75 in 430. ▪️ The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 happened over several days in August where Pueblo Tribes significantly and successfully rebelled against Spanish colonial rule; the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center celebrates its anniversary on August 28. ▪️ On this day in 1955, 14 year old Emmett Till was brutally lynched in Mississippi. ▪️ In 1963, about 250,000 people gathered in Washington D.C. for the March for Jobs and Freedom. And, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his historic “I Have a Dream” speech. ▪️ In 2018, the death toll in Puerto Rico was close to 3,000 because of Hurricane Maria. ▪️ And on this day in 2020, Chadwick Boseman lost his battle with cancer. History reminds us to hold the tensions - celebration and lament, joy and sorrow, rest and work. We see the importance of art, literature, representation, words, and collective action. We look back and remember so that we can look ahead and move onward together.
