Farmer, agronomist, and aspiring plant breeder

Today is day 3 of the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa. It has been a hot one as are most late August days. This year is challenging for US farmers as commodity prices have fallen significantly while input prices remain high. Along with relatively high interest rates, farmers have much less to invest in new equipment and practices. From farmdoc at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign: “Current levels of futures contracts suggest that appropriate budgeting prices for 2024 crops production are $4.00 per bushel for corn and $10.50 per bushel for soybeans. Those prices would result in low returns in 2024, far lower than the last low-price period from 2014 to 2019. Much higher costs cause lower 2024 returns. Those budget price forecasts could change with unforeseen events, as does occur in agriculture. Over the next several months, estimates for returns and incomes will solidify. Still, it seems prudent to plan for much lower prices.” We at Benson Hill work to provide farmers with value-added soybeans with optimized nutrient profiles that provide value to food and feed end users. This earns the farmers a premium over the commodity price. 2025 programs will be rolling out over the next few months.

“Always be pouring water in your bucket” This was some sound advice I got early on about running a breeding program. This quote is getting at whenever you can make every decision and every action create an advantage… and then sum of all the small or large actions adds up. Great breeding programs - after you have quality germplasm, clear focus, and solid science - often revolve around the quality of operations. And operations in breeding spans many 100’s of actions and decisions across multiple years in the product development pipeline. The quality and timing of the operations is a major contributor to overall success. Obviously the span of operations in breeding is large and it is a very extended team that all have a major impact. When this extended team acts with ownership, experience-wisdom and full context of impacts… really great things happen. I love when leaders create this shared ownership and encourage teams to understand up-stream and down-stream impacts. Special thanks to Emily Stagner Karla Santos Jyoti Dharna Alexander Mattock

Expanding Feeding Trials with Our Proprietary Seed Portfolio Benson Hill’s proprietary seed portfolio is backed by decades of research. Our flagship UHP-LO soybeans have been a focus of academic research and development since 2012 and successfully demonstrate the positive impact UHP-LO #soybeans can deliver for end users in animal feed. Commercial feeding trials conducted in 2020 demonstrated advantages over commodity soy when UHP-LO soy was incorporated into the ration, including higher protein and more metabolizable energy. 🐔 Now, after three years of further seed development, a Q1 2024 feeding trial showed how the current UHP-LO varieties, when used in veg-fed broiler diets, drove more significant feed cost reductions than previous generations trialed in 2020, while supporting improved bird performance. The trial also confirmed the total value created with Benson Hill #genetics to be within the range we previously communicated ($100 to $230/acre). 💲 This UHP-LO feeding trial has since expanded into broader commercial use by an integrated poultry player. In addition, Benson Hill has initiated three new feeding trials with other large poultry broiler and turkey producers for the second half of 2024, representing more than 40 percent of the broiler industry. To understand the value of UHP-LO soybeans across the animal feed landscape, we also developed a comprehensive roadmap for nearly a dozen academic studies and commercial feeding trials over the next 9 to 12 months. This roadmap will test UHP-LO soybeans in species ranging from broiler chickens (veg-fed and conventional) and turkeys to swine, dairy, and salmon. 🦃 These end-user market segments represent more than 80 percent of the 30 million U.S. soybean acres used in animal feed. These studies will not only help validate the superior performance of UHP-LO varieties, but the collaborations will also enhance an ever-growing dataset and inform future innovations. #BHIL #Feed #Soybeans
