The U.S. Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy shared a new warning yesterday that parenting can be hazardous to your mental health. Nearly half of parents report overwhelming stress most days, and 65% feel lonely — statistics that really hit home for me as a working mom of two young boys. This is exactly why Bend Health not only provides care to kids, teens, and young adults but also measures its impact on caregiver stress, burnout, and insomnia. Findings from our recent study show that 77% of caregivers experience improvements in sleep, and 73% see reduced stress after care with Bend Health begins. https://lnkd.in/eDcYW3fV Supporting the mental health of children and teens also improves the well-being of their caregivers. Thank you, Julie Jargon, for covering this important topic in The Wall Street Journal. Hey parents and caregivers! I know this is an uncomfortable topic, but have you had the pornography talk with your child yet? 😲 While it may be tempting to skip this one, it’s important to start a dialogue at home because in this digital age, online pornography is prevalent and easy to access. I just sat down with coaches Elaine Taylor-Klaus, MCC, CPCC and Diane Dempster for their podcast ImpactParents. Together, we’re giving you guidance on how to start this convo, ways to keep your child or teen safe online, and how to spot mental health struggles. Give it a listen here (https://lnkd.in/gJh76UAe) and check out this article (https://lnkd.in/gcW2puwH) from Bend Health's therapist Donna Mccutchen, LCSW, LICSW, LMSW-C for additional tips.

What kept me going was all of you who took the time for a call or email thread - thank you to everyone who offered support, guidance, and encouragement. And to all of you still on the hunt, I've got your back to support your job search. The latest peer-reviewed study from our #science team highlights the continued need for screening and rapid access to mental health support for youth. With hospitalization rates for suicidal ideation or attempts doubling between 2008 and 2015, we’re proud of The study in JMIR Formative Research shows that Bend’s screening for self-harm and suicide risk not only identifies risk early, but that the care youth receive significantly improves their anxiety and depression symptoms. https://lnkd.in/eQxtKjTM

A new report published in The Lancet Psychiatry this week makes it clear that we’re not just dealing with individual mental health crises among youth—there are larger societal issues at play, from economic instability to climate change. We have known the the impact on mental health of our youth does not typically have one inciting event, but multiple that build up over time. Specifically 1 in 3 young adults and older who are diagnosed with a mental health conditions are directly related to ACEs (Adverse Childhood Events). This report highlights that the causes of mental health conditions are multifactorial. However, we are at a critical point where the declining mental health of youth today will serious impact the adults of tomorrow. To make real progress, we must rethink our approach by addressing the root causes that are affecting young people’s mental health on a global scale and investing in early intervention and support, both at the individual level, but inclusive of youths’ caregivers and social ecosystem. The stakes are too high for today’s youth to continue down the same path!
