Avets is thrilled to welcome our second Internal Medicine specialist to the team! Dr. McNulty graduated from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. After graduating, she completed a Small Animal Internal Medicine internship at the Center for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care from 2019-2020. Following her internship, Dr. McNulty completed her residency in Small Animal Internal Medicine at Texas A&M University from 2021-2024. Dr. McNulty achieved board certification (DACVIM) in 2024. During her research fellowship year (2020-2021), Dr. McNulty worked with the Dog Aging Project, a prospective, longitudinal, community science research project studying aging in over 50,000 dogs throughout the United States. Through this project, she developed and implemented the End of Life Survey, designed to learn essential details about participating dogs who had passed away. This survey and its results have been published several times in scientific journals. Please join us in welcoming Dr. McNulty to the Avets family 👏

Meet Dutch, the brave 9-year-old chocolate lab who has shown incredible resilience in his battle against cancer. Dutch's journey began with a diagnosis of an anal sac mass that led him to Avets, where he underwent successful surgery thanks to the care provided by Dr. Goodrich and his dedicated surgical team. His mom received a frightening diagnosis when the biopsy revealed that this was a cancerous mass (anal sac adenocarcinoma), prompting urgent action and bringing him to Dr. Calo and our oncology team for specialized care. Dutch pursued a chemotherapy protocol to ensure the best possible outcome. He has been receiving treatments of carboplatin every three weeks, a regimen that he has been handling exceptionally well. With one more treatment to go, Dutch continues to demonstrate remarkable strength and spirit throughout his visits to Avets! Beyond his medical journey, Dutch’s mom recently enjoyed a well-deserved moment of joy when she entered him into a contest. To everyone's delight, Dutch won a photoshoot, capturing his vibrant personality and the loving bond they share. Together, they have faced every hurdle with courage and optimism, embodying the true spirit of determination. We are honored to be a part of Dutch's journey and look forward to witnessing his continued recovery and the many happy moments yet to come. ❤️

Feline hyperthyroidism is a commonly found condition in older cats, but it can be difficult to spot as symptoms are often subtle and start slowly. When it's caught early, most cats can fully recover with treatment. It’s important to keep an eye out for the most common symptoms: ✔️ Excessive thirst and increased urination ✔️ Increased appetite and weight loss ✔️ Anxious behavior including pacing, yowling, and restlessness ✔️ Changes in coat such as dull color, matted/unkempt fur, or bald spots ✔️ Vomiting and/or diarrhea At Avets, we offer a treatment for feline hyperthyroidism called Radioactive Iodine Therapy (I-131). The I-131 treatment center is staffed by Avets clinicians and caregivers, allowing us to offer local follow-up. Because we are a 24-hour emergency and specialty veterinary hospital, our veterinarians and staff are always in attendance to your pets, including monitoring the video feed from the I-131 ward. Meet Willis, a 5-year-old dachshund who was experiencing neck pain and having trouble moving around. Our amazing neurologist, Dr. Rebecca Sandler, suspected intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and an MRI revealed a herniated disc. Willis underwent successful surgery to address these concerns. He recovered with us at the hospital for two days, getting stronger every day! Just 3 months later, Willis' 6-year-old brother, Murphy, had similar issues and needed the same surgery. Frank has been a beloved patient of Avets' Internal Medicine Department for a long time. His journey at Avets started when his owners noticed him losing weight and not eating or drinking as much as he used to. Frank was diagnosed with small cell lymphoma, which is a chronic condition that can be managed with chemotherapy medication at home. With the help of his amazing family, Frank began receiving this medication regularly, helping improve his overall quality of life. Unfortunately, Frank crossed the rainbow bridge, but not before leaving his large paw prints on our hearts. The Rainbow Bridge is a place of great joy and love, where there is plenty of food, water, and sunshine. It's where we will meet our furry friends once again - and this time, we will never be separated. Frank was a gentle soul who was such a joy to have around. You will be dearly missed. 🌈❤️

Did you know that 6 minutes is all it takes for a dog to overheat in a hot vehicle and face lifelong or fatal consequences? ☀️🥵 Pets can still overheat even when the windows are down, or if the car is parked in a shaded area. Our best advice is to not leave your dog in the car - take them with you or leave them at home with plenty of water and shade. They will happily greet you when you return!
