I had the privilege of speaking at National Multifamily Housing Council’s #OPTECH2024 conference a couple of week's back, where we explored the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the multifamily and property management sectors. Here are some of my key takeaways: 1. 24/7 Support – Allowing residents to self-serve at their convenience, anytime and anywhere, is essential, which is why AvalonBay Communities is leveraging AI to enhance proactive, “always on” customer support. 2. Customer Feedback – Recent advancements in Generative AI are proving invaluable in synthesizing actionable insights from customer surveys and feedback, enabling us to better meet resident needs. 3. Navigating Challenges – AI presents a lot of opportunities, but there are some pitfalls to be mindful of, particularly the frustration some customers may experience when interacting with AI-supported assistants or chatbots that cannot answer all of their questions. 4. Your Super-Smart Intern – My panel likened AI to a super-smart intern that requires proper training and guardrails to ensure appropriate responses and effective service delivery. It was an engaging and actionable discussion, and I look forward to seeing the many ways AI continues to evolve the resident experience.
