In a recent op-ed in Fox News, Atlas Network partner Ladies of Liberty Alliance (LOLA) shared a concerning update from Venezuela. María Oropeza, a pro-democracy activist and LOLA member, has been imprisoned by the Maduro regime. Her arrest is part of a broader crackdown on political opponents following a disputed election, with over 2,000 people detained. Many activists are now in hiding, fearing similar repression. In a recent episode of our Freedom Worldwide series, Dr. Tom G. Palmer and leading voices in the freedom movement explored how free-market advocates are tackling the challenges facing women globally. They made the case for why entrepreneurship, property rights, economic liberty, and legal equality for women are crucial to advancing freedom worldwide and driving growth in low-income countries and communities. In this clip, Rosemarie Fike, Instructor of Economics at Texas Christian University, discusses the unequal economic freedoms that women face compared to men when measured globally. She refers to the World Bank’s annual Women, Business, and the Law report, which highlights the various restrictions women encounter in their economic participation that men do not. Shockingly, in 115 countries, women face some form of economic restriction that men do not, with about 33% of the world imposing labor market regulations that limit the types of jobs women can pursue. We are pleased to announce that our partners at Pacific Legal Foundation are the winners of Atlas Network’s 2024 North America Liberty Award for their groundbreaking victory protecting property rights across the United States. This victory began with the case of Geraldine Tyler, an elderly woman who lost her Minnesota condo due to just a few thousand dollars in unpaid taxes. In a practice known as “home equity theft,” the government seized her home, sold it at auction, and kept all $49,000 from the sale—far more than what she owed. Pacific Legal Foundation took on Geraldine’s case, eventually taking it all the way to the United States Supreme Court and won. This landmark victory not only restored justice for Geraldine but also set a critical precedent for property owners nationwide. Pacific Legal Foundation is now working to ensure that every state is in line with the Tyler v. Hennepin County ruling, ensuring that property rights are protected across the country. For decades, Venezuelans have suffered under oppressive dictators, and the Helicoide prison stands as a chilling reminder of that reality. Initially built as a shopping mall, El Helicoide is now a place where the regime tortures its opponents. Even today, in the face of Maduro's relentless anti-democratic crackdown, countless individuals are still being sent to this place—subjected to the horrors and inhumanity it perpetuates. We cannot turn a blind eye to the continued suffering of those pursuing freedom and justice in Venezuela. In a new op-ed in RealClearPolitics, Atlas Network’s Senior Fellow ibrahim Bàbátúndé Anọ́ba sheds light on how the youth-led protests in Kenya and Nigeria are signs of deeper problems affecting Africa. Governments across the continent are weighing down their citizens with rising taxes, expensive government agencies, and unfair policies that are driving local businesses out of operation. In Kenya, protests have grown after IMF-backed tax hikes sparked unrest, leading to over 50 deaths so far as a result of the government’s response. Similarly, Nigeria has faced high inflation, a weak currency, and heavy taxes, forcing many businesses to close. Despite these issues, both governments are cracking down on protesters instead of addressing reforming bad economic policies, which is only making the resistance stronger. https://lnkd.in/eeQFHXN8
