Being in community is wrapping our arms around one another. At the Day Shelter, this looks like our parents celebrating every milestone their child makes. It looks like our faculty saying to our parents on the hard days, “You’re doing your best, and that’s enough.” It looks like our case manager dropping whatever she’s doing when a parent needs to talk. It looks like our parents working everyday to build a better life for their families. Wrapping our arms around one another is building resilience. This World Homelessness Day, will you wrap your arms around our families and staff? Will you join our community of supporters dedicated to empowering families to build the life they envision for themselves? Donate here: https://bit.ly/4eCRhxX

We're excited to share the incredible experience our families had at the Atlanta Falcons game this past Sunday! Our heartfelt thank yous go out to Raheem and Nicole Morris, who made this moment possible. These families enjoyed a day filled with excitement, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments. It's National Literacy Month! Literacy is the key to helping children thrive, but Georgia is home to some troubling statistics. In Georgia (2022): 📕 32% of 4th graders are proficient in reading. 📘 22% of Black and Latinx 4th graders are proficient, compared to 45% of their white peers. 📗 21% of 4th graders on free or reduced lunch are proficient, while 47% of their non-eligible peers are reading at grade level. ❓But it’s just 4th grade❓ It’s easy to believe kids will catch up, but the reality is that 4th grade is a critical turning point. The Annie E. Casey Foundation highlights that this is when students move from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” If a child isn’t reading proficiently by 4th grade, the road ahead becomes even tougher. 1️⃣ in 6️⃣ children who aren’t proficient by 3rd grade don’t graduate high school on time. They’re 4x more likely to fall behind than their peers. 3️⃣ out of 5️⃣ students who didn’t graduate high school were reading below grade level in 3rd grade. But the story doesn’t end here! High-quality early childhood education can change the trajectory for every child, no matter their background or circumstances. We can make a difference. Stay tuned for our next post, where we’ll share how early childhood education creates opportunities for brighter futures.

Thank you Amir Farokhi for coming to the Atlanta Children's Day Shelter to read with our kids and encourage them to explore new worlds through books! National Literacy Month starts in a couple of weeks and we are excited to spread the joy of reading, especially as the new school year begins! #reading #nationalliteracymonth

Our very own District 2 City of Atlanta Council Member, Amir Farokhi, read to the kiddos (his constituents!) today! Amir read My Name written by Supriya Kelkar and illustrated by Sandhya Prabhat. My Name helped our kiddos celebrate their unique identities, take pride in their names, and fostering empathy and understanding for others. Thank you, Amir!
