The Voice of Academic Public Health
About us
ASPPH is the voice of academic public health, representing schools and programs accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). ASPPH promotes the efforts of schools and programs of public health to improve the health of every person through education, research, and policy. Based upon the belief that “you’re only as healthy as the world you live in,” ASPPH works with stakeholders to develop solutions to the most pressing health concerns and provides access to the ongoing initiatives of the schools of public health. ASPPH created the brand This Is Public Health (TIPH) to raise awareness about education and career options in public health through student ambassadors, graduate fairs, partnerships, interprofessional activities, and other pipeline-building events for students.

The rate of the US population 65+ years of age is rapidly growing. This inevitably comes with an increase in chronic conditions, frailty, and disability, making population aging a leading health challenge for this century, especially in the context of an unprepared healthcare system. Recognizing that longevity alone does not guarantee quality of life, ASPPH has been focused on Healthy Longevity, particularly during #HealthyAgingMonth. The unique and complex challenges facing aging populations demand a holistic, longitudinal perspective, one that considers the role of wellness and prevention across the life course. In other words - not just healthy aging, but healthy longevity.

I am absolutely heartbroken over the tragedy that occurred today in Winder, Georgia at Apalachee High School. Gun violence in America is a public health crisis that continues to devastate our communities. It is an especially crucial time to raise our voices and advocate for change, so that we may keep our children, friends, and family safe. My heart goes out to all who have been affected by gun violence. No one should ever have to experience the loss and trauma that this needless and preventable harm can cause. https://lnkd.in/gjNz6eP3

Dr. Michael D Celestin Jr, assistant professor at ASPPH member school LSU School of Public Health, is leading groundbreaking research on tobacco cessation, focusing on interventions for pregnant and postpartum women through a phone-based program. Celestin aims to address the high rates of tobacco use in Louisiana and improve support for those seeking to quit. Celestin says, "Just because you build it, doesn't mean they will come. People just need to be reminded about services that are available. Health care professionals need to be reminded to treat their patients. When patients, especially smoking patients, come through hospitals or clinics, health professionals concentrate on the acute health problem." We are proud of the work that our member organizations are leading in their communities! Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gJhy4rbp

EEE (Eastern Equine Encephalitis) poses a significant threat in New England, with recent cases highlighting the dangers of this rare, mosquito-borne virus. ASPPH member schools are at the forefront of research and prevention, working to understand EEE transmission, develop surveillance methods, and educate the public on protective measures. We urge everyone to take precautions, such as using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding mosquito-prone areas, especially during peak activity times. Stay safe and stay informed.

As temperatures across the United States reach unprecedented levels, the tragic rise in heat-related deaths underscores the urgent need to address climate change as a public health emergency. A recent study published in the medical journal JAMA reveals a 117% increase in heat-related deaths since 1999, a stark reminder of the deadly toll of extreme heat, particularly in vulnerable communities. At ASPPH, we recognize that climate change is not just an environmental issue—it’s a pressing public health crisis. Our member schools and programs are at the forefront of research and advocacy, developing strategies to mitigate these risks and protect the most vulnerable populations. From promoting climate-resilient infrastructure to advancing public health education on the impacts of extreme heat, we are committed to leading the charge in addressing this critical issue. It’s time for collective action to ensure that our communities are prepared for the challenges ahead. Let this alarming trend be a call to action for all of us in public health to prioritize climate change in our efforts to safeguard health and well-being.

Back-to-school season brings excitement for new classes, a new year, and new opportunities. However, it can also lead to an increase in illnesses for kids, teachers, and parents. “When kids return to school, they encounter new germs, which can lead to more illnesses like the common cold,” said Suzanne Judd, Ph.D., chair of the UAB School of Public Health Department of Health Behavior. "Kids can then bring germs home, impacting families and workplaces." Follow these tips to stay germ-free at home and protect your friends, family, and coworkers! Misinformation is all too common and it's crucial to stay vigilant, especially during an election. Spotting misinformation requires checking the credibility of the source(s), cross-verifying facts by looking for the same news reported on multiple reputable platforms, examining the evidence, and being wary of emotional tactics that exploit you for quick persuasion. Spreading misinformation threatens the very foundation of democratic engagement and the fair-conduct of elections. Do your civic duty and stay informed.
