A recent article in The Architect's Newspaper features insights from architects and architectural educators as they share how anti-DEI legislation and the broader cultural sentiment about DEI impact their work. Kendall A. Nicholson, Senior Director of Research, Equity, and Education at ACSA, spoke with the publication to emphasize the importance of ACSA’s work toward equity and social justice in the midst of anti-DEI sentiments. “A lot of the legislation has some incendiary language about race and gender but does give a caveat for content that is integral to a specific discipline or stipulated by accreditation,” Nicholson said. “And so bolstering the parts of an architecture education and curriculum that allow us to double down on this as central to any architect’s understanding of the world is where we spend our time.” Visit https://lnkd.in/eUsRY5rk to read more. #ACSA #ACSAResearch #Press #HigherEd #Equity #DEI

About us
The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, membership association founded in 1912 to advance the quality of architectural education. The school membership in ACSA has grown from 10 charter members to over 250 schools in several membership categories. These include full membership for all accredited programs in the United States and government-sanctioned schools in Canada, candidate membership for schools seeking accreditation, and affiliate membership for schools for two-year and international programs. Through these schools, over 5,000 architecture faculty are represented. In addition, over 500 supporting members composed of architecture firms, product associations and individuals add to the breadth of interest and support of ACSA goals. ACSA, unique in its representative role for schools of architecture, provides a forum for ideas on the leading edge of architectural thought. Issues that will affect the architectural profession in the future are being examined today in ACSA members schools. The association maintains a variety of activities that influence, communicate, and record important issues. Such endeavors include scholarly meetings, workshops, publications, awards and competition programs, support for architectural research, policy development, and liaison with allied organizations.

We are excited to announce the Communicating Humanitarian Shelter Exhibit Charrette! ACSA, in partnership with the International Organization For Migration (IOM), and with the support of the USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, is delighted to hold a joint student design charrette. The charrette will challenge students to design an exhibit that engages the public’s understanding of the need for humanitarian shelters to support the world’s most vulnerable people. Ten teams of students, with two students per team, will be selected to participate in the charrette. The charrette will take place in person during the ACSA113 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, LA, March 20-22, 2025. Programming will include two informational webinars for students on October 28 and November 26. Students are invited to submit an interest statement by December 18, 2024. Every year, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture and faculty from around the world nominate graduating students whose work exemplifies excellence in architectural education. Thanks, Danelle Briscoe for bringing my name to the forefront. My M.Arch Thesis got selected into the Innovation and Material category, Fall 2024! This recognition goes to The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture, my thesis director David Heymann FAIA, Aleksandra Jaeschke, the Texas Society of Architects, the AAUW, and the brilliant people from the Universidad San Francisco de Quito at Galapagos. We hope that by sharing a glimpse into what architecture students create while in school, the #industry will be encouraged to consider opportunities for #innovation and #collaboration with emerging and diverse talents. Stay tuned for the full 2024 Fall Showcase> https://lnkd.in/eSNJths8 #emergingprofessional #emergingarchitech #innovation #designmaterial #timberconstruction

There’s still time to apply for ACSA College of Distinguished Professors Travel Grants for Emerging Faculty! The travel grants stem from a recognition that architectural education—and specifically, ACSA’s conferences— benefit from the inclusion of more faculty and students from systemically marginalized backgrounds. Academic conferences provide important sites for the exchange of ideas and experiences among faculty. They also provide an opportunity for faculty to expand and deepen their network of colleagues. This helps faculty advance in the profession and creates opportunities for collaboration in research and teaching. Submit your applications by TONIGHT, October 9, 2024, to be considered. Please visit https://lnkd.in/eQhSvFpR for more information. #ACSA #DPACSA #TravelGrant #ACSAConference #Conference #EmergingFaculty #Faculty

Proud to share the release of the work of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) 2023-2024 Leadership Committee. ACSA is the international organization of architecture schools in North America. The report "Framework for Expanding K-12 Engagement" was developed as a part of the committee’s work to guide institutions seeking to initiate or expand their K-12 engagement efforts. The document sets up an inquiry-based approach, examining the obstacles and opportunities that must be considered in pre-college architecture engagement. It offers considerations, key questions, and resources aimed at helping schools of architecture formulate their own investigations into appropriate modes of K-12 engagement, tailored to their unique situations and goals. It was a pleasure to chair the Leadership Committee that developed and wrote the report "Framework for Expanding K-12 Engagement". I am grateful for the dedication and the work of the committee including Ulrike Altenmüller-Lewis, John Comazzi, Catherine Hamel, Noah Resnick, AIA, Peter Robinson, Michael Zaretsky, and Kendall A. Nicholson, Ed.D. You can read and download the full report through this link:

Welcome back to the ACSA Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight! Today, we’re celebrating architect, educator, and co-founding principal of Flow Design Architects, Darguin Fortuna, AIA, NCARB. Born in the Dominican Republic town of Jima Abajo, Fortuna attended the Boston Architectural College where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. He now teaches at his alma mater as an Adjunct Instructor. In 2017, he founded Flow Design Architects along with his partner Marcos Severino. Flow Design is a multidisciplinary practice focused on the design of memorable experiences through the use of materials, colors, and form. In 2022, Flow Design won the 2022 AIA Film Challenge’s People's Choice Award for “The Change We Seek.” The short film confronted the lack of diversity in architecture and advocated for a better understanding of the needs of minority communities. Fortuna was awarded the Henry Adams Medal and AIA Certificate of Merit in 2016. In 2019, he won the 2019 Emerging Designer Award, the Dean Arcangelo Cascieri Scholarship, and the AIA Henry Adams Medal & Certificate of Merit at the BAC. This year, Fortuna became the first architect born in the Dominican Republic to receive the AIA Young Architect Award.
