Thousands of athletes gather to compete in the #Paralympic Games every four years. Para-athletes use a range of accessories, equipment, and other technologies when competing—all realized through some smart engineering! Here are five paralympic sports and the impressive equipment being used at the #Paris2024 Games: 1. Para archery: Although the bows are largely the same, accessories like stabilizing stools, custom grips, and release braces make Paralympic competition possible. 2. Wheelchair rugby: Two types of wheelchairs, offensive and defensive, are available to rugby players. Offensive chairs have a front bumper and wings on the sides to keep them from getting caught up on other chairs, while defensive chairs feature bumpers or hooks on the front that are designed to block or hold on to other wheelchairs. 3. Para swimming: Though prostheses are banned in competition, innovations like tapper devices and, more recently, Samsung Electronics' digital swim caps help visually impaired swimmers navigate obstacles. 4. Para-cycling: Specialized handlebars can accommodate upper-body disabilities, while athletes with lower-body disabilities can attach prostheses directly to bike pedals. Handcycles and tricycles are also built similarly to racing bikes, featuring carbon frames and multiple gears. 5. Para track and field: Lower-limb prosthetics, often called running blades, translate the energy an athlete produces when running from potential to kinetic energy. The world’s biggest and most powerful machines in the world do the work that not so long ago took armies of people. These large, powerful giants mine the earth’s natural resources, move people and components, help erect turbines, and dig tunnels. Take a look at five machines that are among the largest in the world: https://lnkd.in/eAuNmSiE Photos: WSDOT; Flickr/wideworld_0; Wikimedia Commons/Anagoria; KONE

The efforts of those in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) are a testament to the commitment it takes to advance engineering into the future. I am pleased to announce the designation of Sreenath Gupta, Principal Mechanical Engineer at Argonne National Laboratory, as an ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) fellow. Dr. Gupta's contributions to advanced ignition systems have helped revolutionize the power and propulsion industry, not to mention his volume of work for our ASME Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power. https://lnkd.in/exBxZZ8q

How did these friends and former University of Pennsylvania students build and bring to market the world's first desktop waterjet cutter? It all started in 2012 when one of the students—now WAZER co-founder and CEO Nisan Lerea—recognized that there was an inconsistency between what tools were available to students and what engineers use in the real world. So, he decided to create a portable waterjet prototype for their school’s machine shop.

Today is #WomensEqualityDay, which commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, granting women the right to vote. At ASME, we're making a conscious effort to diversify our leadership. Our current ASME president, Susan Ipri-Brown, began her term as ASME’s 143rd President this past June. Susan is an ASME Fellow, has served on the ASME Board of Governors, and has been an active member of the Society for 34 years, including her years as a student member! Additionally, for the first time in our history, our Board of Governors will consist of seven men and seven women—a significant milestone in our organization’s evolution. In the coming months, keep an eye out for our new “Celebrating Gender Diversity” campaign designed to inspire and empower gender diversity efforts in engineering and at ASME.
