The American Society of Civil Engineers Portland Younger Member Forum has kicked off their mentorship program with Grant High School! We are partnering with Engineering, Robotics and Information Technology teacher Mr. Nick Fenger. Nick Fenger has invited our civil engineers to mentor students as they work through their bridge project where they will learn the fundamentals of statics and strengths of materials, develop bridge designs using industry-standard engineering software, and construct multiple iterations of their designs using paper straws and laser-cut plywood connections. The project concludes with load testing the bridges to failure and writing a technical report. Our enthusiastic volunteers Christopher Pyke, P.E., Jovanna Quezada-Montano, EIT, Jennifer Cant, PE, Baelie Werner, EI, and Robert Schomp will mentor the freshman to senior level high school students throughout the process, helping them succeed with their project but also to form lifelong connections with civil engineering. We look forward to the questions and designs the students will create, and continuing our mentoring relationship with Portland Public Schools for our 4th consecutive year!

Our mission is to facilitate the transition of engineering students to young professionals.
About us
The Younger Member Forum (YMF) is a sub-group of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) that is open to members 35 years of age or younger. Our mission is to facilitate the transition of engineering students to young professionals by providing younger members with opportunities for professional and leadership development, networking, and community service. Oregon YMF hosts a variety of events including technical tours and presentations, community service projects, student and Section outreach events, and social activities. Active participation in YMF is a great way for young engineers to become involved in their local engineering and public communities, and develop professionally. Information about upcoming events and activities is posted on the website and included in the weekly YMF email. The board is always looking for motivated engineers who would like to be more involved. Please contact [email protected] for additional information about YMF or to be added to the YMF email list. We look forward to meeting you at one of our upcoming events and hope all young engineers and students consider YMF a valuable resource.

On August 8th the ASCE Portland Younger Member Forum partnered with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry to show ASCE's newest movie titled Cities of the Future. After the movie, a panel of Civil Engineers engaged with the audience by answering questions. The panel included the 2024 President of ASCE Marsia Geldert-Murphey, who delivered an inspiring prelude to the movie and eloquently answered our guests' toughest questions. Over 100 ticket holders participated in the event, making it one of the Portland YMF's most successful community collaborations! Thank you to our panelists Courtney Davis, P.E., Marsia "Marsie" Geldert-Murphey, P.E., F.ASCE, Ana Tijerina Esquino, EI, Perrin Falkner, PE, Caitlin Jacobson, EI, Larry Magura, Jovanna Quezada-Montano, and Robert Schomp. And thank you to the community for being involved and engaging with your local civil engineers!
