With a decades-spanning career as an actor and performer, Rita Moreno credited therapy for her ability to cope with stress and discrimination. “Therapy is something that really saw me through some horrible times in my life, particularly things having to do with prejudice and bias. I don’t think I could’ve done it on my own,” she said. According to the CDC, the effects of racism can be key drivers of health inequities among people of color – hindering individuals from attaining their highest levels of health. Mental health care can bring support to individuals confronting the effects of inequity and discrimination. We applaud the news about recent improvements in mental health among youth and it’s encouraging to see rates of depression on the decline. But it’s not time to let up on increasing access to care for young people. In 2023: ▪ 53% of high school girls reported persistent sadness or hopelessness ▪ 27% of high school girls said they have seriously considered attempting suicide ▪ 40% of all high school students experienced persistent sadness or hopelessness, with more than 3 in 5 reporting those feelings among LGBTQ+ students We must continue to provide culturally competent, affirming care that reaches young people. Telehealth can be a pathway to care with increased convenience and reduced stigma.
