Calling all NY-region architects! The League is partnering with the Fair Housing Justice Center (FHJC) to get the word out about an exciting opportunity to build accessible housing. FHJC is a NYC-based nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated to eliminating housing discrimination; promoting policies that foster open, accessible, and inclusive communities; and strengthening enforcement of fair housing laws. The Adele Friedman Housing Accessibility Fund provides targeted financial assistance for disability-related housing modifications for homes within the FHJC’s service areas, including all five boroughs of NYC and Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester Counties. Don’t miss Current Work: Accessible Schools on April 23 Architects, educators, and advocates will come together to explore the process of creating learning and teaching environments where the broadest range of bodies and minds can thrive. Focusing on educational facilities for K-12 students, the presentations will examine both the physical design of school buildings and the ways in which educators create spaces of learning for young people. With panelists Mary Burnham, a founding partner of MBB Architects; Lauren Melissa Ellzey, an autistic self-advocate, author, educator, and activist; Kayla Hamilton, a performance maker, dancer, educator, and consultant; and Kristie Patten, counselor to the president at New York University and professor in the department of occupational therapy at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and principal investigator of the Nest Support Project at NYU. The Institute for Public Architecture is now accepting applications for the 2024 Summer and Fall Residency programs, taking place June 1–August 17 and September 3 – November 17, 2024 respectively. Spend eleven weeks living and working in a collaborative environment within a landmarked building in the midst of New York harbor. ⁠ ⁠ Emerging and mid-career architects, urbanists, landscape architects, designers, and those committed to the public realm in all disciplines are invited to apply.
