Inspired by Legos, Comfort Town bursts forth from its otherwise dull surroundings like a set of miniature Lego buildings placed on a gray carpet. The 180 low-rise apartment buildings of Comfort Town offer a playful contrast to the sprawling 1950s and ’60s communist-era housing that surrounds them. Comfort Town is the first residential complex in Ukraine designed according to the ‘block development’ principle, rather than the traditional Soviet micro-district typology. The Elbphilharmonie, is a concert hall in Hamburg’s HafenCity on the Elbe River’s Grasbrook peninsula. Its modern glass structure, resembling a sail, wave, iceberg, or quartz crystal, sits atop the old Kaispeicher A warehouse. The project began as a private initiative by architect Alexander Gérard and art historian Jana Marko, with Swiss firm Herzog & de Meuron designing it. After 3.5 years of development, the City of Hamburg took over the project. Standing 108 meters (354 ft) tall, it is the tallest inhabited building in Hamburg and a central feature of the HafenCity development.
