While onboarding at The Arbinger Institute, I’ve been genuinely impressed by the organization’s deep-seated commitment to humanizing the workplace. From the get-go, it was clear that I was joining a group that prioritized fostering authentic connections and understanding among people. It's inspiring to see a team so open to growth, constantly seeking ways to evolve and better connect with clients, partners, and the broader community. This dedication to growth and openness led to the creation of the 4th edition of "Leadership and Self-Deception." The world has changed dramatically in the past 25 years, and conversations about leadership, diversity, and inclusion have evolved – especially in the workplace. Arbinger felt a deep responsibility to ensure that the experiences and insights shared in this book reflected today’s realities. This newest edition isn’t just an update; it’s a reflection of our ongoing mission to bring more empathy, understanding, and authenticity to the workplace. It’s been incredible to work within a company that's committed to making meaningful shifts in order to bring a more human-centered approach to organizations. ❤️

Why create a fourth edition of Leadership and Self-Deception?   A lot has changed in the past 25 years, and we knew that the experiences depicted in earlier editions of Leadership and Self-Deception could be expanded on and improved to be more inclusive.   With this new edition, we've made important changes inspired by our work with clients, such as:   ⭐️ Updated stories ⭐️ Broader set of characters ⭐️ Practical guides   Until September 1, use the code 30LEADERSHIP to get 30% off your copy on Amazon, here: https://shorturl.at/0yyAD And PS - Don't miss the chance to learn more about the new edition and enter to win a leather-bound copy here: https://shorturl.at/ySTYL

Another month in the books. Now this is starting to feel like a templated post, but I don’t feel like I have much else to share. If we somehow had a chance to catch up live, THIS is pretty much what’s on my mind. Here’s my takeaways from each of the books I listened to in August… The First 90 Days: I found this mostly dry and forgettable. I’ll save you the read: Match your approach to change to the business situation, or STARS = startup, turnaround, accelerated growth, realignment, or sustaining success. Look for quick victories. Don’t try to fight too many battles at once. Dollars and Sense: this was a light-hearted look at how money makes us feel. It was as much about personal finance as it was branding. Because we cannot compute the infinitely complex opportunity costs of each decision, we make irrational choices. I loved how Dan Ariely and Jeff Kreisler analyzed the value we sense in things like language (of effort or consumption) and ritual (of effort and ownership), often imperceptible unless you stop to recognize these tactics. Will think about these concepts often. Finding Ultra: The first chapter to the last chapter was inspiring and heart-wrenching. I was enthralled in Rich Roll’s Hawaiian island epic trek when I collided with a deer last week on my early morning commute. I felt such unreal peace after the wreck, but a deep sense of loss from finishing the book and longing for more hours listening in the car. A deeply introspective memoir on leaning into your purpose, and I can’t recommend any of these titles more than this one. The Anatomy of Peace: this was a recommendation in the comments from last month’s recap! A great narrative to construct something memorable out of an abstract idea. It’s about learning to recognize when your heart is at war, and I have felt that way many times in the past 6-12 months. I have also felt my heart at peace in certain circumstances during that same period. How is this even possible? Answer is in there, worth the read/listen. Thanks Neil Oler for recommending this from The Arbinger Institute. With that, I have the next few titles in the queue. What else do you suggest, friends? #peace #ritual #endurance #change

📚 Book Recommendation: “Leadership and Self-Deception” by The Arbinger Institute I’ve been completely absorbed in Leadership and Self-Deception lately—I honestly can’t put it down because I’m eager to see what’s said next. It’s quickly become one of my favorite books on leadership. It’s not just about leading others but about the deeper work of leading ourselves. One moment that really resonated with me was when the book pointed out, “I wasn’t telling myself the truth about what was going on. I was self-deceived.” This made me stop and reflect on how often we justify our actions, not realizing how we might be distorting reality. It’s a humbling reminder that leadership begins with the courage to be honest with ourselves. Another insight that stood out: “Isn’t it illogical to expect your work to be unaffected by your situation?” We often push ourselves and others to perform despite the challenges we face. But this quote reminds us that we’re all human—our circumstances impact us, and it’s essential to acknowledge this if we want to create a supportive environment for our teams. Whether you’re an experienced leader or just starting out, this book offers profound takeaways. For seasoned leaders, it’s a chance to revisit and refine the foundations of authentic leadership. For newer leaders, it’s a guide to navigating the complexities of leading with empathy and honesty from the start. If you’re committed to growing as a leader, this book is an absolute must-read. #Leadership #SelfDeception #PersonalGrowth #LeadershipDevelopment #EmpathyInLeadership The Arbinger Institute Leadership Development

Ever feel that little 'twinge' of awkwardness before reaching out to someone new? I had that moment this week during the Virtual Book Launch of the The Arbinger Institute's new 4th Edition of Leadership and Self-Deception. The event was so full, and the chat box was alive with comments as Mitch Warner led us through a fantastic event with the The Arbinger Institute team. (Highly recommend catching the replay if you can, it was fab!) I noticed a few people who really stood out in the chat and I thought, "I'd love to meet these people and connect, but how?". Initially, I hesitated; after all, it’s easy to lurk in the background when you're not sure, right? But something nudged me to take a chance, so I jumped on #LinkedIn, looked them up to see what we had in common, and reached out to a few of them to connect. One of those connections was Michael Diehl, and wow, let's just say that am I glad I took that leap and pressed 'send'. Michael was so enthusiastic and responded right away. We met for a virtual coffee yesterday, and I have to say, we just 'clicked; and it felt like catching up with a great friend. We both share a passion for people leadership and talent management and coaching (oh and a love for everyone at The Arbinger Institute!! 🤗). Our conversation was the kind that leaves you buzzing with ideas and that bouncing feeling of catching up with someone you trust and really like. What started as a nervous LinkedIn connection has turned into an agreement to try out co-mentorship...something I didn’t see coming but am incredibly grateful for. Michael doesn’t know this yet, but he truly made my day and really inspired me. The lesson here? Push past the awkwardness / discomfort /shyness (whatever you are feeling), and go for it.. hit that connect button. Sometimes, taking that small risk leads to connections that could transform your growth, enable you to help others, and bonus here, maybe even make your day a little brighter. So, what’s stopping you? That next connection could be the start of something amazing! #Leadership #Networking #Connection #ArbingerInsitute (Image courtesy of #Freepix and edited)
