The APTC, in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, has received funding from the VA Office of Research and Development to continue the Wen H. Ko Summer Internship Program (SIP) for another five years! This funding helps expand the program to bring in the best and brightest undergraduates along with an emphasis on recruiting individuals from diverse backgrounds. Our robust, 10-week, hands-on summer internship encourages and inspires the next generation of students to pursue careers in biomedical, clinical, health services and rehabilitative research by providing them the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research projects with APTC Investigator mentors who are focused on addressing the pressing clinical needs of our nation's Veterans. We are so grateful to be able to continue offering this internship experience and look forward to welcoming our next round of students! *Applications for Summer 2025 will go live on our website on December 1st, 2024. https://lnkd.in/e7n-8Zs9 A special thank you to our SIP leaders Dr. Allison Hess Dunning and Dr. Jeffrey R Capadona for their efforts on making this program a continued success! #STEM #internship #studentinternship #research #VA #inspire

About us
The Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center, located within the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, is a Department of Veterans Affairs Research Center in the Rehabilitation Research and Development Service. The Center addresses the pressing clinical needs of disabled Veterans by designing and disseminating new rehabilitation interventions. Our R&D and translational programs focus on Prosthetics & Orthotics, Health Monitoring & Maintenance, Neural Interfaces and Activity-Based Neurorehabilitation. Our unique and supportive environment enables APT Investigators to develop advanced assistive or restorative technologies that serve Veterans with sensory, motor, or cognitive deficits, as well as limb loss. Investigators with the Center include multiple recipients of prestigious Presidential and NIH awards, and have been named some of the "Best Doctors in America" by Cleveland Magazine and Best Doctors, Inc. The APT Center operates in partnership with Case Western Reserve University and collaborates with clinicians and researchers located at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, MetroHealth Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and numerous other national institutions.

The APTC had a great time in Chicago this week at the Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals (ASCIP) Annual Conference and Expo where we exhibited our ongoing research opportunities for individuals with paralysis to SCI clinicians and professionals! APTC investigators Dr. John McDaniel and Lisa Lombardo, along with PhD student Eric Heidorn, gave an exciting talk on our adapted exercise programs and PhD student Matt Morrison gave a podium presentation outlining some of our innovative research on using functional neuromuscular stimulation for trunk control in the SCI population. There was even time for the team to catch a Cubs game at the classic Wrigley Field! Ronald Triolo Emily Johnson
