"My daughters taught me the art of a political deal. [Ahead of our primary], she told me: 'You can run, but the night after the election, NSYNC is going to be at the Nassau Coliseum, and we want to go.' So, on primary night, we pulled off this really stunning upset. When the local TV station asked, ‘What’s your next step?’ I looked into the camera and said, 'I'm going to an NSYNC concert with my daughter.'“ This Election Day, hear the story of former DCCC Chair Steve Israel’s surprise victory in his first congressional race in Episode 4 of Applecart’s “Decision Makers” podcast. THIS is the insight: “Surrounded the entire program with a complex news boosting strategy. Roughly 25,000 ads - hundreds (maybe thousands) of articles. Voters read less news than ever. We brought the news to them.” It’s why companies like Applecart matter. Thanks Jen Roth for putting this in my feed.
We’re landing the plane on the Harris paid team - but I am taking a break from staring at spreadsheets to share some of our team’s biggest wins on 📱persuasion social📱: Social ads are not premium ads. But the audience’s attention has been a premium to us from the jump. 📺 Got out of the resize mindset. We found fewer people complete resized TV/premium videos on social. Some of these ads were really awesome and tested great - but it doesn’t matter how well they test if people don’t watch them. 🧪Distilled complex topics and into social-first ads ranging from 4s to 30s (with a big preference for 4-15s). These included full social-first remakes, podcast-style ads, memes, gif-style creative, letterboxed clips from our TV/CTV ads, and creator-style content. 🤳Ingested well over 400 creator videos to fuel that creator-style content machine. Some were tested for persuasion, some were adapted to for mobilization, and others were activated immediately for rapid response. 📰 Surrounded the entire program with a complex news boosting strategy. Roughly 25,000 ads - hundreds (maybe thousands) of articles. Voters read less news than ever. We brought the news to them. 👻 Started platform diverse and stayed that way. Our social spend isn’t just all on Meta - we are the top political ad spender on Snap by a landslide (did you see our battleground First Story takeover today?) and we run social-first content on YouTube Shorts, too. We didn’t let social stay in the walled garden - we used Spaceback to bring social out of the feeds and into other channels. I’ll circle back to share some favorite ads and to chat about our persuasion search, cross-channel mobilization, and our principal travel amplification programs. In the meantime, back to my sheets!

"It was a perfect storm: one horrific debate night, the anxiety... from so many donors and the sudden turning off of spigots where a flow of dollars became a trickle... the Trump campaign out-raised the Democrats for the first time in a long time…. I think the aggregate of all of those things... finally led [Biden] to what I think history will regard as one of the most noble and difficult decisions that any president has made—not to run." In Episode 4 of Applecart’s “Decision Makers” podcast, we were thrilled to welcome Former DCCC Chairman, Steve Israel. During a historic election year, few have a better perspective on how decisions are made at the highest levels of Democratic politics. Listen to the full episode and subscribe for more below!
