Have you been using iNaturalist this summer? AMC's Research team just updated our numbers, and as of July 2024, our Tracking Flowers Along the Appalachian Trail project has 16,357 observations of 8 common plant species across the AT. Our most observed plant so far is Red Trillium, with 2,912 observations, and the state with the most total observations is New Hampshire, with 4,678 observations! 🌼 We use these observations — taken by community scientists like you — to see where along the AT certain plant species can be found, and how their distribution changes as you move further North or South along the trail. They also use this data to track phenology, or plant life cycle, changes in response to climate change. Want to join in on the fun? It’s easy! • Check out our dashboard link to see which plant species to look for: https://lnkd.in/eam8Yg9T • Download the iNaturalist app: https://lnkd.in/dviGHqd • When you’re on the trail, take a photo of one of our 8 target plant species on your smartphone and upload it to iNaturalist, with location on📍📸 That’s it! Our Research team can then access YOUR community science observations and use them as they research plants along the Appalachian Trail.

This awesome group from On Belay Inc. recently completed a hut-to-hut hike in the White Mountains, made possible by the Outdoor Journey Fund. "What an amazing trip a few weeks ago! We are so thankful for the support of the Outdoor Journey Fund covering the cost of our Teen Overnight Adventure. Without the support of this grant, it would have been difficult to provide this trip to our families!" Seeded with generous support from our friends at L.L.Bean, this fund helps nonprofit groups experience adventures in the outdoors at AMC locations, supported by AMC staff.
