Happy Friday #AmeriFamily! Today, we close out Poverty Awareness Month. We want to give a huge shoutout to all of our sponsors that partner with us to fight poverty, transform lives, and create sustainable change. Plus, the AmeriCorps VISTA members who stand with them to make a difference for their community and neighbors. Our final highlight this month is Techos Pa' Mi Gente, a sponsor located in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This organization was founded in 2017 in response to the damage of Hurricane Maria. If you don’t speak Spanish, their name translates to “roofs for my people,” and that’s exactly what they do. Their founder, Amarilis Gonzalez, saw the aftermath of Maria in her community and took action. Through hard work, she took her hopes and dreams to make a difference and built them into reality. Today, a cohort of our members serve with the organization to continue the fight against the inequities that still exist from the damage from nearly eight years ago. Check out the video to learn how together we are making a difference. ⤵️ And stay tuned as we share the stories of our sponsors, members, and alumni all year long! #AmeriCorpsVISTA #AmeriCorps #Service #NationalService #PuertoRico #Community #HurricaneMaria #DisasterServices #DisasterRelief #FridayReads #Spanish

Empowerment of People to Create Together the Future We Want This statement is one of the many values of today’s #PovertyAwarenessMonth highlight: Rural Action. Founded in 1991, this AmeriCorps VISTA sponsor focuses on community development organization throughout Appalachian Ohio to build thriving communities and healthy environments for all. They work with their members and partners, like us, to help their neighbors do big things – grow local businesses and jobs, restore their environment, and encourage the next generation of leaders. Last November, we had the opportunity to visit one their project sites at the Mount Zion Black Cultural Center. Where our member Avery serves to supports the Athens, Ohio BIPOC Appalachian population to facilitate programming that expands access to cultural resources and information, as well as expand Mt Zion’s capacity to fund raise. Check out how they’re expanding opportunity to learn about racial, environmental, and social justice movements in Southeast Ohio. #PovertyAwarenessMonth #NationalPovertyAwarenessMonth #AmeriCorpsVISTA #AmeriCorps #Poverty #MakeADiffernce #Nonprofits

Today we’re highlighting our sponsor, the Ohio Association of Foodbanks. For over 30 years, they have provided food and other resources to people in need and have pursued areas of common interest for the benefit of people in need across the state. They represent the 12 Feeding America foodbanks and their 3,600 member hunger relief programs, serving Ohioans struggling with food security in all 88 counties. Since 2006, we have partnered to build the capacity of Ohio’s charitable hunger and poverty relief network. Last year, we had the opportunity to meet with our AmeriCorps VISTA members serving in central Ohio. From recruiting and managing volunteers, connecting communities with resources, like food and furniture, building programs, and creating sustainable solutions, our members stand with the Ohio Food Banks to address problems of poverty and inequity in local communities. Check out more in the video below and stay tuned as we share how organizations are disrupting the cycle of poverty! #PovertyAwarenessMonth #NationalPovertyAwarenessMonth #AmeriCorpsVISTA #AmeriCorps #Poverty #MakeADiffernce #Nonprofits #FoodBank #FoodSecurity
