A new study reveals that disparities in outcomes for children with amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” are linked to the age at which they are diagnosed. Amblyopia is the leading cause of vision loss in children, affecting 2% of the population. The study highlights that younger age at diagnosis, higher socioeconomic status, and private insurance were associated with better treatment outcomes. To address inequities in care, interventions are needed that promote earlier diagnosis and increase access to pediatric eye screenings, particularly in underserved communities. CVS Health is laying off 2,900 employees nationwide as part of a $2 billion cost-saving initiative. These layoffs, representing 1% of the company’s workforce, will primarily affect corporate roles, while front-line workers in stores, pharmacies, and distribution centers will remain unaffected. The company is also contemplating splitting its retail and insurance units in response to investor pressures, which could lead to 2 publicly traded entities. This move reflects broader operational challenges and declining earnings, prompting discussions about the future structure of the company. The recent endorsement by the FDA’s Oncology Drug Advisory Committee to incorporate minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity as part of composite endpoints in clinical trials marks a pivotal moment for the treatment of multiple myeloma. However, this decision raises important questions about its practical implications in clinical practice. Insights from a survey conducted at the Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute, presented at the International Myeloma Society (IMS) 2024 Annual Meeting & Exposition, shed light on this topic. Additionally, Dr Lucio N. Gordan, who led the research, highlighted the importance of MRD testing for high-risk patients, where early detection of recurrence can significantly impact treatment strategies.
