"Could a simple set of three numbers on New York college student IDs save lives? That's the goal of a bill awaiting Gov. Kathy Hochul's signature. It’s called the “Student Lifeline Act.” Those three numbers — 988 — are the phone number for a national network of local suicide prevention and crisis intervention call centers that are open 24/7." July is Minority Mental Health Month! Prioritizing minority mental health is crucial. Per the CDC, as health educators and communicators, we can all contribute to mental health equity. Here’s how: 📚 Ensure that mental health educational materials and communication activities are culturally and linguistically appropriate, inclusive, and respectful. Follow health equity principles by using plain language and culturally sensitive approaches. 🌍 Take active steps to increase the reach of mental health information to racial and ethnic minority groups. This means utilizing culturally responsive communication outlets that resonate within diverse communities. 💡 Verify and promote free and low-cost mental health resources through various channels to ensure accessibility for all. Let’s work together to make sure these resources reach those who need them most. As we celebrate Pride Month, it's crucial to reaffirm our commitment to providing inclusive and supportive healthcare environments on college campuses. 🏳️🌈 Every student deserves to feel safe and respected, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. College health care providers play a pivotal role in promoting the well-being of all students. This is why ACHA's LGBTQIA+ Health Coalition advocates for culturally competent services, supports LGBTQIA+ students and professionals, and shares best practices to enhance care. Thank you to all of our members who are part of this coalition movement toward healthier, more inclusive campus communities where every student feels valued and supported. #PrideMonth #CollegeHealth #Highered

In an announcement yesterday, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy declared gun violence a public health crisis, echoing calls from health officials for years to tackle this issue. https://lnkd.in/gFnfjJhP The impact of gun violence extends deeply into college and university settings, where incidents threaten the safety and mental well-being of students. Recognizing this, last year ACHA released a comprehensive white paper, "Addressing Gun Violence on College and University Campuses," which examines the alarming statistics of gun violence affecting campuses and also outlines strategies and best practices for institutions to enhance safety measures. By aligning efforts with Dr. Murthy's call to address gun violence as a public health crisis, we can collectively work towards ensuring that campuses remain secure spaces for all students: https://lnkd.in/eCwFVGk8 #GunViolence #CollegeHealth #highered
