This week’s Bird of the Week is the Parkinson’s Petrel! Known as the tāiko by the Māori people of New Zealand (where it breeds), it’s also called the Black Petrel, an apt description for the all-dark seabird, whose only spot of color is its pale-yellow bill. 🖤💛 🐳Parkinson’s Petrels often follow dolphins and whales. Are they BFFs? Perhaps — those cetaceans are certified cuties!🐬 But the likelier reason for their affiliation is that, as the marine mammals feed, they drive large shoals of fish to the surface – like food delivery for a hungry seabird! 🥡 What other large figure brings lots of fish tantalizingly close to the surface? Fishing vessels. 🚢 Black Petrels who seek food in the wake of fishing boats are at risk of becoming bycatch. What are we doing to help Black Petrel persist? American Bird Conservancy collaborates with partners in Ecuador and Peru to reduce seabird bycatch in their artisanal longline and gillnet fisheries. 🎣 See our full Parkinson’s Petrel profile at https://bit.ly/4gknlI8. #tāiko #BlackPetrel #ParkinsonsPetrel #Seabird #Bycatch #BirdOfTheWeek

During last month's webinar, we learned about Millo, the first Crested Eagle chick ever recorded in Colombia, which fledged in a reserve established by Sociedad Ornitológica de Córdoba (SOC) in partnership with ABC. We also enjoyed the chick in Peru that is currently being livestreamed thanks to a collaboration between Rainforest Expeditions and ABC. If you missed it, you can now watch the webinar and access additional resources at https://lnkd.in/g36Ty_RU. As we saw on the webinar, healthy habitat is incredibly important to birds — and as habitat loss is the greatest threat facing wild birds today, conservation efforts by ABC and our partners are more important than ever. Thank you for everything you do to help wild birds throughout the Western Hemisphere thrive. Until next time, Jordan E. ⛰️The mountain of evidence is growing: Neonicotinoid pesticides, or neonics, are wreaking havoc on our environment—and the latest study is more alarming than ever. Published in June 2024, this research reveals that neonics are the leading cause of butterfly declines, including a shocking 33% drop in Monarch populations. 🦋 🐛🚫 Neonics don’t just harm pests—they contaminate soils and waterways and impact wildlife far beyond their intended targets. The fallout? Fewer caterpillars and insects mean fewer birds, weakened chicks, and disrupted ecosystems. Some neonics are even directly toxic to birds, threatening their survival, reproduction, and migration. 🪺 🛑 It’s time to take action. Banning unnecessary uses of neonics, like seed treatments and lawn applications, is a crucial step to protect our birds, butterflies, and entire ecosystems. 📢 Learn more and join the fight to stop the devastating effects of neonics on wildlife: abcbirds.org/pesticides. Together, we can make a difference. 🌱 🐦 ✨ #SaveTheButterflies #ProtectPollinators #BanNeonics #Birds #StopPesticides #WildlifeProtection #EnvironmentalJustice #NatureNotNeonics #Neonicotinoids #MonarchDecline #PLOSONE Hardy Kern, MPA

American Bird Conservancy is launching its inaugural Untreated Seed Pilot Program and is looking for innovative growers to enroll for the 2025 growing season. The program offers funding on a per-acre basis to American growers and producers interested in sourcing and using corn, soybean, and cereal crop seeds not coated with neonicotinoid insecticides, also known as neonics. By reducing or eliminating the use of neonic seed treatments in select cropping systems, the program aims to support beneficial insect populations which contribute to healthy habitats for birds, like the Western Meadowlark and Northern Bobwhite quail, and other wildlife.

We are thrilled to announce the establishment of La Cristalina Reserve, a stunning 656-acre tropical rainforest in northwestern Colombia’s Alto Sinú region! La Cristalina is particularly special as it hosts the first-ever recorded Crested Eagle nest in Colombia, a discovery that played a key role in the reserve’s creation. This majestic bird, listed as Near Threatened, is rarely seen, making this protected habitat even more important. 🦅 La Cristalina was established earlier this year by ABC partner Sociedad Ornitológica de Córdoba (SOC) with support from direct investment funds of the Conserva Aves initiative and other generous ABC donors. Conserva Aves is a regional initiative to create and expand subnational protected areas in Latin America. It is led by ABC, National Audubon Society, BirdLife International, Birds Canada, and RedLAC with support from Bezos Earth Fund. Want more Crested Eagles in your life? Check out our live camera (linked in the article below) that was produced in partnership with Rainforest Expeditions, streaming a Crested Eagle nest near Tambopata National Reserve in Peru's Amazon rainforest! 🪹 Whether in-person or through the wonder of the internet, we hope you enjoy experiencing these magnificent birds up close and join us in celebrating the preservation of their rainforest home!🌿 https://bit.ly/4ecHsGl #RNLaCristalina #LaCristalinaReserve #CrestedEagle #BirdConservation #CrestedEagleCam #ConservaAves #TerritoriosDeVidaColombia #SociedadOrnitológicaDeCórdoba #TambopataNationalReserve

🌿 Meet Alvanna Johnson, ABC’s Kirtland's Warbler Community Engagement Fellow! Alvanna is a proud Eleutheran (native of Eleuthera, The Bahamas) who has always loved nature. She developed her love and knowledge of birds while working at the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve, a national park on Eleuthera. There, she learned about the many species that migrate to and through The Bahamas and the obstacles they face moving back and forth from their breeding grounds to their wintering homes. 🌎 🌲Decades of conservation work on their Michigan breeding grounds helped the charismatic Kirtland's Warbler escape extinction. However, the future of this species also depends on the integrity of its nonbreeding grounds in the Bahamas. Building cultural awareness and appreciation in Bahamian communities is essential to ensure this species will continue to delight admirers wherever they live along the bird's extraordinary migratory pathways. As ABC’s Bahamian Fellow, Alvanna aims to build cultural appreciation, particularly among Bahamian students, educating them more deeply about Kirtland’s Warbler, the ecosystems it depends upon, and how Bahamians can protect and celebrate their natural heritage. Welcome, Alvanna!🐦🌴 Can’t wait to learn more? RSVP for this month’s ABC webinar, “Back from the Brink: Delisting the Kirtland's Warbler,” and go behind the scenes of Kirtland’s Warbler conservation! 🎟️ https://lnkd.in/gQmmGeKu #ConservationAndJustice #KirtlandsWarbler #BirdConservation #Warblinar #BirdBahamas #ConservationFellowship Steve Roels Jordan E. Vulture’s efficiency extends to their very anatomy. Masters of low-energy travel, they conserve energy by soaring, relying on thermal updrafts to glide effortlessly, rather than flapping their wings. This adaptation allows them to travel hundreds of kilometers in a single day while searching for food. Unfortunately, that same adaptation leads them to travel on the same currents used by wind turbines, increasing their risk of colliding with them. Given all the ways vultures help us by cleaning the environment and reducing emissions, it’s imperative that we ensure OUR efforts to reduce emissions and mitigate climate change take the health of bird populations into consideration. American Bird Conservancy is the leading organization ensuring renewable energy buildout is done with proper environmental safeguards that protect birds and their habitats. Bird-Smart strategies, including mandatory permitting and improved science that lead to proper siting and mitigation, can help us take action to minimize mortality for vultures and all birds.
