About us
America Succeeds mission is to improve educational opportunities, outcomes, and equity by harnessing the influence and acumen of the business community in accelerating systems change. We are uniquely positioned between business and the education policy sector – acting as an “education voice to business” nationally and a “business voice for education” at the state-level. For the past 40 years, the primary purpose of our schools has been to maximize academic achievement. However, over that time, the world has greatly changed. We believe the purpose of schools today is to ensure students can think critically and creatively, collaborate effectively, apply skills and knowledge to solving real problems, and find meaningful, fulfilling ways to contribute to the world and their community. America Succeeds’ initiatives are designed to help education systems meet this purpose while maximizing equity, access, and opportunity for all students. Our advocacy efforts are aimed at broader culture change and our policy efforts focus on systems change and preparing every student to succeed in the competitive global economy and contribute to their local community. The power of this approach lies within connecting business leaders to a network of state partners who share America Succeeds’ mission and values. Network participants derive value through affinity and proximity to other partners as well as our ongoing efforts to support new and developing business-in-education organizations that can accelerate the network’s collective goals. Too many of my clients discount the idea of "soft skills"... until we start naming them as skills like: --Leadership and management skills (e.g., influencing, leadership development, providing mentorship) --Communication (e.g., negotiation, public speaking, written and verbal communication) --Critical thinking skills (e.g., problem solving, prioritizing, intellectual curiosity) --Collaboration skills (e.g., being team-oriented, building teams, working with others remotely) --Creativity (e.g., being visionary, ideating, innovating) --Having a growth mindset (e.g., being curious, being entrepreneurial, being a self-starter) I appreciate that America Succeeds created a visual of these skills... and calls them "durable skills".
