Author of "ChatGPT, MD" | Forbes Healthcare Contributor | Stanford Faculty | Podcast Host | Former CEO of Permanente Medical Group (Kaiser Permanente)
At AHIP’s 2024 Consumer Experience & Digital Health Forum yesterday in Nashville, Jeanette Thornton and I discussed “The AI Revolution in Medicine: What the Future Holds.” To kick off our conversation, she asked: "What spurred the idea for your latest book, 'ChatGPT, MD,' and how did it come together?" I explained that the decision to co-author the book with #ChatGPT was a statement about the potential of generative AI to reshape our world, and healthcare especially. In my previous books, 'Mistreated' and 'Uncaring,' I explored the core problems of American medicine: a broken system and a deeply ingrained culture that's resistant to change. While those books sparked important conversations and catalyzed meaningful discussions, the journey toward systemic and cultural transformation requires more than words or ideas. To make the leap, we also needed the right tools. With the release of ChatGPT on November 30, 2022, the medical profession acquired what it had long lacked: a technology capable of revolutionizing American healthcare for the betterment of both the providers and recipients of medical care. That's why I subtitled my book "How AI-Empowered Patients & Doctors Can Take Back Control of American Medicine." For more on ChatGPT's practical applications in medicine, check out the full story here: https://lnkd.in/gNEuUezn Congratulations to AHIP for organizing such a transformative event. I want to thank those responsible for making this forum happen, including Stacy Laufer Card, Jasmine Phiri, Nicole Garratt, Jaenette Thornton and the entire AHIP team. #healthcareonlinkedin #generativeai #AHIPDigital

Great to talk about "Driving the Future of Digital Health” at AHIP’s 2024 Consumer Experience & Digital Health Forum. I was joined by Kyle Zebley, Senior Vice President, Policy, American Telemedicine Association and Lauren Riplinger, JD, Chief Public Policy & Impact Officer, AHIMA and Danielle Lloyd, MPH, Senior Vice President, Private Market Innovations & Quality Initiatives, AHIP who moderated our conversation. As I spend time talking to physicians all over the country about technology trends, it is clear that there is broad enthusiasm for digital health tools that can enable physicians to improve access to care and the quality of care we deliver. But consumers are wary! Ongoing concerns with the use and misuse of patients’ health data is slowing adoption. Results from a 2021 American Medical Association survey show that 94% percent of patients want strong laws to govern the use of their health data. When considering data privacy, nearly 70% of surveyed individuals hesitate and more than 60% decide not to start using digital health tools because of these concerns. More must be done by regulators and software developers to strengthen trust in digital health tools. #digital #health #ahip

Huge thanks to AHIP for inviting me to moderate this dream team of a panel about direct-to-consumer health care at #AHIPDigital. Nworah Ayogu pointed to the natural tension between what a consumer may want or choose vs. what a health plan (or a clinician) may guide them toward. Sarah Mastrorocco shared how Instacart responded to the need for a senior help line during the pandemic -- and how they serve other market segments, like expectant moms, in tailored ways. Duncan Greenberg urged leaders to be nimble when it comes to new tech because the demands of direct-to-consumer health care are only speeding up. Himanshu Arora gave us a three-layer cake image when thinking about the promise of AI in DTC health care, but warned about the environmental costs of the energy that generative AI consumes. Many more insights -- if you were there, please add your take-aways! AHIP attendees: please swing by the AHIP Meet Up Lounge, Booth #707 (Room 104 , Level 1) at 6:30pm TODAY where I'll be signing copies of my book, #RebelHealth.
