The Alzheimer's Association® and National Institute Of Aging have released new criteria that signal an era of innovation in understanding, diagnosing, and managing Alzheimer's disease. The new criteria focus on biomarkers in diagnosing and staging Alzheimer's, pushing for diagnoses based on Core 1 and Core 2 biomarkers, rather than just clinical symptoms. Core 1 biomarkers include early changing indicators like amyloid positron emission tomography (PET), cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, and plasma biomarkers, while Core 2 biomarkers include later-changing indicators such as biofluid and tau PET. The criteria propose a multi-stage progression model based on biomarkers to help assess the severity of Alzheimer’s. The use of biomarkers is recommended for evaluating symptomatic individuals and determining their eligibility for treatments. As we at Altoida continue to advance our Digital Biomarker Platform for neurodegenerative disorders, we are excited to see this recognition in the potential of digital cognitive testing which offers the potential to reliably detect subtle cognitive changes through repeated testing, opening new possibilities for early and accurate diagnosis.
