In the hype over AI/ML we sometimes forget the important reality that many companies have been leveraging this technology for years or even decades as the underpinning of their platforms. Really enjoyed my discussion with Karandeep Singh Badwal and discussing companies like Altoida, Inc. that are leveraging AI/ML in innovative ways to impact patient lives.

🚀 Exciting News! Altoida and the Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Cognitive Disorders Unit at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona are proud to announce the launch of our latest study: “Use of Plasma and Digital Biomarkers for Screening Alzheimer’s Disease in a Cohort of Patients with Cognitive Complaints in Primary Care.” This pilot study, conducted across four primary care units in metropolitan Barcelona, Spain, aims to evaluate the operational feasibility and clinical value of combining blood and digital biomarkers in a real-world setting. Hospital Clinic neurologists will identify candidates referred from primary care with cognitive complaints, aiming to recruit 400 participants over the next 18 months. We are pleased to announce study enrollment has already commenced. The study includes a clinical visit with blood collection for pTau-217 and NfL, and completion of the Altoida Digital Cognitive Assessment.  Additionally, approximately half of the cohort will undergo further evaluations at the Memory Unit, including lumbar puncture/CSF biomarker analysis and a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. A longitudinal evaluation will be conducted at 12 months in a subgroup of subjects, using Altoida’s NeuroMarker platform. Advances in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research will make early detection and monitoring more accessible, even in remote settings. A study published this year in the Journal of Alzheimer’s & Dementia highlights the potential of measuring AD and neurodegeneration biomarkers from venous dried plasma spots, offering a remote, accessible approach to diagnostic sampling. The study found that amyloid, tau, neurodegeneration, and astrogliosis biomarkers could be reliably measured with this method, showing strong correlations with their levels measured in plasma. P-tau217 stood out with the highest diagnostic accuracy in discriminating amyloid-positive status. This new method of testing is simpler and allows for easier collection and transportation, making it a practical option for remote diagnostics that can extend the use of blood-based biomarkers beyond the traditional care setting. Importantly, blood biomarker sampling could play a critical role in detecting the earliest neuropathological changes in Alzheimer’s disease, allowing for earlier interventions and better management of the disease. Altoida is dedicated to advancing the early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s through innovations in machine learning and augmented reality-based cognitive assessment. By combining our Digital NeuroMarker Platform with blood biomarkers, we aim to equip healthcare providers with the tools needed to detect the earliest signs of the disease, enabling timely and more effective interventions.
