Each week we do assessments all over Los Angeles and Orange County. While on our usual assessments (hillside repair, soft-story, non-ductile concrete buildings, retaining walls, foundation replacements, retrofits, etc.) we took pictures and wanted to highlight some of what we saw. 1: We're back in Rancho Palos Verdes, where we've returned to the Portuguese Bend Community that we've previously highlighted. They have experienced a significant increase in movement in the past couple of weeks, and the changes are drastic. What was once a slow movement of about an inch a year has now turned catastrophic for some residents. The City of RPV estimates the land is moving at a rate of about four to five feet per month. 2: This homeowner uses a rope to walk up the driveway and into their home. Now, with the recent shift, even that might be too difficult. 3: Movement in the area is anticipated, but the rate at which it is now happening is astonishing—it's almost as if you can visibly see the ground shifting. 4: Just last week, a power line fell due to the land movement, sparking a small fire, showing how dangerous the area has become. Over the weekend, Southern California Edison indefinitely cut off electricity to around 245 homes in the area, following the city's evacuation warning for residents. Back in July, gas service was cut off for over 100 homes, a drastic measure that highlighted the severity of the situation. 5: This block wall has delaminated due to excessive spall damage caused by water intrusion. 6: You can see the rusted rebar protruding through. This structure is at risk of further deterioration until the problem is addressed. 7: Brick foundations are not ideal in seismic-prone areas due to their inability to withstand the stresses from earthquake movement.
