About us
The mission of the Allen Institute is to unlock the complexities of bioscience and advance our knowledge to improve human health. Using an open science, multi-scale, team approach, the Allen Institute focuses on accelerating foundational research, developing standards and models, and cultivating new ideas to make a broad, transformational impact on science. Founded by philanthropist and visionary Paul G. Allen, the Allen Institute is a recognized leader in large-scale, open science research. Its research institutes include the Allen Institute for Brain Science, Allen Institute for Cell Science, Allen Institute for Immunology and The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group. The Allen Institute believes that team science significantly benefits from the participation of diverse voices, experiences and backgrounds. High-quality science can only be produced when it includes different perspectives. Current knowledge of cell behavior is incomplete and biased, as most studies focus on white European males. Deaths from major diseases are decreasing, but racial disparities are increasing. Together with The New York Stem Cell Foundation Research Institute, we are pioneering an effort to develop ethnically diverse induced pluripotent stem cell lines to create more inclusive cellular models for studying disease – addressing critical caps in biomedical research.

✨🔭 #OpenScope - a shared observatory for neuroscience — is accepting letters of intent from external scientists until Sept. 10 at 5PM Pacific. Once a year, OpenScope accepts experimental proposals from external scientists following a Request for Proposals (RFPs). Proposals are reviewed by a panel of leading experts from the international community for their feasibility and scientific merit. The Allen Institute then carries out the selected in vivo experiments in mice brains following verified, reproducible, and open protocols for in vivo single- and multi-area two photon calcium imaging and #Neuropixels electrophysiology. Data from completed projects is made available to project scientists during a one year period. Eventually all datasets are released to the entire community on DANDI Archive, as NWB files.
