Current knowledge of cell behavior is incomplete and biased, as most studies focus on white European males. Deaths from major diseases are decreasing, but racial disparities are increasing. Together with The New York Stem Cell Foundation Research Institute, we are pioneering an effort to develop ethnically diverse induced pluripotent stem cell lines to create more inclusive cellular models for studying disease – addressing critical caps in biomedical research.

About us
The mission of the Allen Institute for Cell Science is to create dynamic and multi-scale visual models of cell organization, dynamics and activities that capture experimental observation, theory and prediction to understand and predict cellular behavior in its normal, regenerative, and pathological contexts.

Our Cell Line of the Week is SOX-2 - our first cell line to go into space! 🚀 Last year in collaboration with Axiom Space, Cedars-Sinai Regenerative Medicine researchers Arun Sharma and Clive Svendsen sent SOX-2 to the International Space Station National Laboratory to study how microgravity impacts stem cell production and growth. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (the type made from skin or blood cells) have the potential for treating disease, but mass producing faces challenges that may be overcome in the near weightlessness of earth's orbit. Global impact on a cellular level. 🧫✨ Brock Roberts, supervisor of the Genome Engineering team, shares why and how the recently expanded Allen Cell Collection has changed the field of cell science. The Allen Cell Collection is a catalog of human induced pluripotent stem cell lines and plasmids. Each line/plasmid helps reserchers study the behavior of cells by fluorescently illuminating specific structures. These cell lines are routinely tested for quality and made available to researchers for only the cost of shipping through our partners at Coriell Institute for Medical Research and Addgene. Thank you to everyone at the Allen Institute for Cell Science who contributes to this important #OpenScience resource! #OpenScienceWeek
