Women’s Equality Day commemorates decades of work by women who organized, petitioned, and picketed to win the right to vote. The suffragettes’ work did not bear fruit until 1920 with the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which prohibits states and the U.S. government from denying citizens the right to vote on the basis of sex. This work was just the beginning of the fight for equality because it took another 45 years to extend voting rights to Black men and women with the adoption of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. ALFDP: The Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals applauds the work of all who work to advocate for #diversity, #equity, and #inclusion.

Disability Pride Month seeks to amplify the voices of individuals with disabilities by honoring the history, achievements, experiences, and struggles of the disability community. It also commemorates the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act in July 1990. National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month brings attention to the unique challenges that racial and ethnic populations face in the U.S. These include access to health insurance and treatment, overcoming the stigma associated with seeking mental health care, finding mental health providers within one’s racial or ethnic group, and addressing the racial trauma that results from experiencing or witnessing racial discrimination or racial violence. At ALFDP: The Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals, we also raise awareness about the obstacles that different minority groups face. Today, we commemorate #Juneteenth, which celebrates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and marks the end of slavery for most in the United States. This day holds profound historical significance, reminding us of the struggles, resilience, and achievements of Black communities. It was on June 19, 1865, that a Union general ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. Let’s honor Juneteenth by reflecting on our nation’s history, acknowledging past injustices, and recognizing the progress we've made. This day serves as a reminder that our journey toward racial equality is far from over. We must stand together, educate ourselves, and actively work to dismantle systemic racism in all its forms. At ALFDP: The Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals, we celebrate Juneteenth by honoring those who fought hard for freedom and #equality. We encourage everyone to engage in meaningful conversations, share knowledge, and support Black-owned businesses and organizations. Let’s uplift Black voices, celebrate their achievements, and empower one another to create a more just and inclusive society.

It’s June, which means it’s #PrideMonth! We are celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and honoring those who have fought so hard for #equity and #inclusion. At ALFDP: The Association of Law Firm Diversity Professionals, we also advocate for acceptance, self-affirmation, and visibility and are proud to promote #DEI efforts and education within the legal community. 

We are excited to share that we’ve named Barnes & Thornburg LLP partner Lindsey Dates as our first outside legal counsel. Dates will guide our organization on issues related to employment, antitrust, and other legal matters that may arise. “The person selected had to be someone who could go toe to toe with the fiercest adversary, well-rounded with respect to their legal skill set, supported by a firm that was committed to ALFDP’s mission, and personally committed to DEI. Lindsey checked each box with a jumbo sharpie,” said J. Danielle Carr, Chief Inclusion Officer for Lowenstein Sandler LLP, who serves as President for the ALFDP Board of Directors.
