Part 2 of our series on real-life harms of AI during the spookiest month of the year! 👻 Are you thinking of dressing up as Barbie this Halloween? Don't ask AI for costume inspo... In an article published (and later deleted due to the ensuing backlash) by BuzzFeed, 194 images (produced by the generative AI model Midjourney) of Barbie from "every country" exposed the harmful racial stereotypes and biases embedded in AI technology. There were numerous instances of whitewashing, offensive representations, and cultural inaccuracies within the images: South Sudan Barbie had a gun. Lebanon Barbie stood on rubble. Several Middle Eastern Barbies wore a ghutra, a traditional headdress worn by men. Multiple Asian Barbies, including Tajikistan and Thailand, were given blonde hair. It's certainly scary to witness the proliferation of AI imagery produced by AI algorithms that reduce cultures to harmful, false stereotypes and erase diversity. Lamya Robinson's story is a powerful reminder of the dangers posed by flawed algorithms, especially on this #DayOfTheGirl. At just 14, she was wrongly denied entry to a skating rink due to a facial recognition error, a clear example of real-world algorithmic harm. This incident underscores how AI systems can disproportionately harm marginalized communities, particularly Black girls, and the urgent need for responsible, equitable technology. If you've experienced AI harm or bias, you can submit a harms report with us at report.ajl.org. Learn more about Lamya's story via Dave Gershgorn's article in The Verge: https://lnkd.in/eXFZK59.

"...There are psychotherapies that are based on developing vulnerable emotional relationships with a therapist. And I’m very concerned about having an AI bot replace a human in a therapy that’s based on a vulnerable emotional relationship." - Jodi Halpern MD, PhD. As we saw with a Belgian man who died by suicide in March of last year after talking with an AI chatbot, it can go horrifically wrong. Dr. Halpern, a public health professor at University of California, Berkeley, sat down for an interview with Sheila Kaplan to talk about the influence of and concerns over AI usage in mental health care.
