I Help CEOs build ‘CRO-Ready’ organizations and arm CROs to succeed // Founder of The CRO Collective / Zenna Consulting Group

I've been busy recording new episodes of the CRO Spotlight this summer - and I'm very excited for you to listen to the conversations. First up: Philip Lacor, CRO of Airbase, and I had a great conversation about how a CRO should be optimally appointed and supported. Philip, with his extensive background in engineering, finance, and sales, shares insights on how his diverse experience has equipped him to lead cross-functional teams effectively. He emphasizes the importance of understanding customer pain points and aligning sales, marketing, and product teams to deliver comprehensive solutions. Philip delves into the critical aspects of his role, focusing on building relationships across departments and understanding the voice of the customer to drive strategic initiatives. He explains how Airbase transitioned to a "land and expand" sales motion, highlighting the necessity of aligning product marketing, sales incentives, and onboarding processes to ensure seamless growth. With a focus on continuous learning and strategic alignment, Philip Lacor exemplifies the impactful role a CRO can play in shaping a company's future. Take a Listen.

    Chief Financial Officer at Airbase

Reporting that Improves the Culture of Spend In an era of hyper-efficiency, companies are more dependent than ever on productivity data. Access to that data is not always easy, but when it’s available, it can be a game changer. Since my team and I have started relying on our company’s expanded spend analytics feature, we’re loving our new bottleneck report. It tells me who is slowing down the purchasing process and for how long. What makes this single report so powerful? As the finance team, we allocate budgets across the company to achieve OKRs. Each department is expected to be smart about how quickly and strategically they deploy those funds to achieve the results we’re seeking. But if we make it too hard or slow to get access to those funds, we in finance are not meeting the needs of our companies. In other words, spending within the financial plan is equally as important as spending on time. So, when we see a designated approver in the spend cycle sitting on requests — especially if it’s a regular pattern — my team knows we need to intervene. Once we understand the reason for the bottleneck — a lack or misalignment of resources or a problem of prioritization — we’re able to find a way to fix it. Whether it’s our AP, IT, legal department, or a particular manager who is unresponsive, we’re able to unblock the process, not just a specific purchase request. Unblocking processes allows us to become more efficient as a company. Opening up our procurement process so that it flows safely and efficiently from the initial request to reconciliation is the key to improving all our spend processes. After all, our employees need to spend money to do their jobs and deliver on their KPIs. My team and I want to make that as easy, fast, and effective as possible. What are your favorite productivity measures?

At Airbase, our Controller serves double duty. In addition to handling all of the company’s financial reporting, she’s also our customer #1. This means she tests and gives feedback on our new releases before we ship them more broadly, and let’s just say, she’s tough! 💪 She loves our new spend analytics capabilities so much that she even said we could quote her on that. Here it is! 👇 🗣 “Spend analytics from Airbase has unlocked smarter savings and greater efficiency. My team can now easily identify top maverick spend contributors by vendor, department, or category and spot cost-saving opportunities early. With comprehensive visibility and insights into our spend process, we have data at our fingertips to streamline approvals, optimize cycle times, and drive organization-wide policy adoption. This definitely elevates everything we do.”  — Kelly Hicks, Global Controller, Airbase
