⭐Call for artists!⭐ AIGA Chicago is excited to announce that it will be creating its first-ever community-designed card deck! In celebration of Hispanic Heritage month, AIGA Chicago members will create a Lotería card deck. For the uninitiated, Loteria is a unique game that uses a special deck. We have details on the game itself below. For the event, each individual face of the card will be designed by a different member of the AIGA Chicago community. There are 54 cards in total, so 54 slots will be available. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Once all designs are completed and the decks are printed, we’ll host a launch party where we can all play Lotería with the new decks! To participate, you must be an AIGA Chicago member. If you are not an AIGA Chicago member, there is currently a membership special! Starting September 1st, all new AIGA members can enjoy free membership for the remainder of 2024 when they join for 2025. That’s right—by signing up now, new members get access from September 2024 through December 2025 for just the 12-month rate. The application to design one of the cards can be found at https://lnkd.in/g3CUy5KN We're asking for $5 to participate to support organizing the event. Please note that AIGA Chicago reserves the right to approve or reject designs for quality assurance. Application closes September 11. If you have any questions about participation, please email [email protected] . . . What is Lotería? Lotería is a game similar to bingo, with a Mexican twist. It’s played using a deck of 54 illustrated cards and colorful boards populated with images and phrases related to hispanic folklore and culture. You need at least three people to play, with one of the players acting as el griton, or yeller, who calls out the cards for competing players. As el griton calls out the cards one by one, players fill out their board, called tablas, as you would in a game of bingo. The point of the game is to be the first to fill your card and shout buenas or lotería to declare your victory! . . . #AIGAChicago #DesignCommunity #DesignChi #HispanicHeritageMonth #loteria

Check out Nanako's work on July 10th at Ask + Give! Tickets at https://lnkd.in/ghh5MyJY . . . Nanako Kono was born in 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. She moved from Japan to Las Vegas, Nevada in 2016. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis on painting, drawing, and printmaking and a minor in Art History at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2022. Now she is in the Master of Fine Arts Program in Painting and Drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She makes paintings about miscommunication in comics format that incorporate drawn elements, print media, sewing, and collage. She is inspired by the comic strip, employing devices such as rectangular panels, speech balloons, and recurring characters in her paintings. The narratives she creates often feature two characters, a juvenile frog named Rolly, and a woman, both of whom are projections of herself. Rolly was initially inspired by the Japanese proverb, “A frog in the well knows nothing of the great ocean.” She began to identify with this proverb after her move to Las Vegas, USA from Tokyo, Japan. The process of learning English as a second language increased her interest in linguistics and semiotics. She could no longer guarantee that the sign/symbol/word she chose conveyed the meaning she intended to the people around her. This new focus on miscommunication caused her to reflect on other contributing factors, including power imbalances such as those within a family. Her own memories of miscommunication between her and her parents when she was a child became the starting point for her current body of work. She depicts the interaction between Rolly, her character, and an undefined “other”. Up to this point, she has used humor and cuteness as the entry point to discuss the quality and the structure of how messages are exchanged in contemporary adult relationships including those between lovers, family members, and friends. The imperfect features of language and signs, and the tension that miscommunication can create in an interaction, provide inspiration for the narrative she construct with the characters. . . . #AskAndGive #DesignChi #SupportLocalArtists #ShowcasedDesigner
