AIA Philadelphia Committee On The Environment
Architecture and Planning
AIA Philadelphia COTE supports and promotes sustainable practices within the architecture and planning profession.
About us
AIA Philadelphia COTE currently led by co-chairs @Roshni Krishnan, @Katherine Urbaniak, and @Danielle Fleischmann consists of five sub-committees. 1.Policy and Advocacy meets weekly to advocate for policy and legislation that advances the role of architects in addressing climate change. COTE PAS will promote legislation that encourages high performance, low carbon impact buildings, environmental justice, and seeks alliances with groups that share similar goals and want to advance similar policy. 2.Design Awards: AIA National has defined the criteria for the AIA COTE Top Ten Awards to be more broadly the Framework for Design Excellence, with a focus on integrating sustainability into all considerations of design achievement and awards. The Design Awards sub-committee is made up of COTE members interested in helping integrate these requirements into the general design awards program. 3.Zero Waste is deeply committed to the mission of debunking myths about waste and to correcting inequity in our consumption-based culture. Meeting weekly, we are developing resources for the purpose of educating others on waste reduction, elimination of single-use plastics, and inspiring change. In 2021 we will inaugurate a first-of-its-kind AIA Zero-Waste Planning Guide for events. 4.2030 Working Group: The mission of the AIA 2030 Commitment is to support the 2030 Challenge and transform the practice of architecture in a holistic way. AIAPhillyCOTE’s 2030 Subcommittee works to both increase the number of 2030 signatory firms to support current signatories through high quality, tailored educational programming and collaborates with 2030 WG across the country as part of the AIA’s Climate Action Plan. 5.Environmental Justice sub-committee commits to educating ourselves more on environmental justice, its underlying racial justice, and supporting other organizations that champion this cause.

Join us for our COTE August Monthly meeting tomorrow 08/15 (Thursday) at 8AM. We will be joined by Mrinalini Verma, AIA, SITES AP Verma and XINYI ZHANG from OJB Landscape Architecture , a national landscape and urban planning practice. They will be presenting and sharing case studies about the intrinsic link between landscapes and human health+wellness. Landscapes and outdoor spaces have an immense role in improving human health and wellness. We call this the “Nature Effect”. The presentation is going to talk about how might one provide access to nature in constrained urban environments and regulate it to improve its occupancy and activation. The presentation also mentions evidence-based approaches to drive design decisions throughout the project. Check out AIA Philadelphia website for joining link or reach out to us!

We are saddened to share the terrible news that Josh Abbell, our beloved AIA Philadelphia COTE member and friend passed away in June. Josh was a Senior Project Architect at Ballinger and was an integral part of AIA Philadelphia COTE when it started in 2016. He was very approachable, kind, calm, and was a champion of sustainability. He chaired the 2030 working group subcommittee and had an incredible ability to bring clarity to complex topics. He took a great interest in planning presentations for our members. Our hearts go out to his wife Amy, his son Julian, and his family. AIA Philly COTE has created a video tribute in memory of Joshua Abbell. AIA Philadelphia Committee On The Environment reposted this
Buildings make up 40% of greenhouse gases. And architects have the expertise to design buildings that can change our planet for the better. That's why the collective change can be ignited by the #2030Commitment. The #AIA 2030 Commitment is an actionable climate strategy that gives us a set of standards and goals for reaching net zero emissions in the built environment. Join us today at 5 PM to hear from Marc Tsurumaki of LTL Architects about Biogenic House Sectionss and get a chance to check out the exhibit at the Center for Design Philadelphia!
AIA Philadelphia COTE in collaboration with LTL Architects are excited to announce the opening exhibit titled ' Biogenic House Sections' at the Center for Design Philadelphia tomorrow as part of our 'Low Carbon Assemblies' series. The exhibit will be on view from 01-27 June, 2024. The exhibit presents a compelling argument for rethinking the material basis of architecture in a time of environmental crisis asserting that the most viable means to radically reduce embodied carbon in new buildings is to use plant and earth based materials. The exhibit is based on the publication Manual of Biogenic House Sections (ORO Editions, 2022) cataloguing 55 case studies around the world through intricately detailed cross-sectional perspectives and axonometrics complemented by photographs of construction processes, interiors, and exteriors. The book, and thus the exhibition, is organized into material-specific chapters (Wood Frame, Mass Timber, Bamboo, Straw, Hemp, Cork, Earth, Brick, Stone, and Reuse). Join us on June 13th at 5:30PM at the Center for Design Philadelphia. We will be hosting the reception with a presentation talk by Marc Tsurumaki, Founding Principal LTL Architects. We want to thank Marc Tsurumaki, Founding Principal LTL Architects and Kyle Reich, LTL Architects for the collaboration.
