This week the Sutton Trust published new research showing a growing gap between working-class and middle-class graduates in accessing internships, which is driven by employers continuing to underpay interns and giving opportunities to friends and family rather than advertising them: https://lnkd.in/eJ-Ji8Wp While we recognise this can be a complex issue, AGCAS has long been concerned about unpaid internships and we would encourage employers to develop fair internship and work experience models that support social mobility and recognise the contribution that interns make. Not only is there a moral obligation to offer fair rates of pay, it also helps to widen the talent pool by ensuring that opportunities are available to people from all backgrounds. Our Work Experience Standard sets out some guidelines to ensure that opportunities offered to students and graduates are fair and high quality: https://lnkd.in/eQZW7VX3 Barrie Grey, AGCAS President, said: "I know firsthand the significant work our members do to develop high quality paid internships and work-related learning as part of a student’s degree. Along with the highest quality of support for students we work hard to ensure students and graduates are not disadvantaged because they cannot access paid experiences. Diversity is at the core of talent development and productivity and we work tirelessly to help employers see it is in their interests to offer accessible paid opportunities to attract diverse talent to their organisations."

New AGCAS research outlines the role and scope of the work of student workers in careers and employability services, the training they receive and the perceived advantages and drawbacks to employing them. Overall, respondents felt the benefits of employing student workers far outweighed the drawbacks and there was enthusiasm for the work they do. Careers services are benefitting from an enhanced understanding of student needs. The top three benefits to student workers themselves, as reported by their head of service, are: 🔸 Opportunities for skills development 🔸 Practical work experience 🔸 Paid work The findings are based on an autumn 2024 survey of 80 UK and Ireland careers service leaders. The report, available to AGCAS full members, includes data to allow services to benchmark their student employment and plan for the future. The report is enriched by a series of case studies from AGCAS members and their student workers. Thank you to Dr Sophie-Louise Hyde Ruth O'Riordan Eleanor Donoghue Bev Herring Hannah Newmarch and all the student workers who shared their stories.
