  • The Benu Impact Report is now live, and we’re thrilled to partner with community supporters who share our commitment to Benu’s mission. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at yesterday’s event, which perfectly reflected the core of our mission and highlighted the essential work we’re doing, along with the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This is just the beginning of our story. We’re excited to offer a glimpse behind the scenes at Benu, highlighting the wide range of programs we’re implementing to uplift communities and support their most vulnerable members. Stay tuned in the coming weeks and months for opportunities to engage more closely with our efforts to address Seattle’s housing crisis through equitable, culturally aligned solutions. • JOIN US TOMORROW | As part of our Benu Community Day celebration - tomorrow, September 7, 2024 from 10 - 11:30AM in the Benu Community Home courtyard, we invite you to join us for a Community Mobilization & Call to Action event focused on supporting Seattle’s unhoused Black male community. 🏠As the City grapples with a 27.7% increase in its unhoused population—of which, according to mist recent numbers, over 20%% are Black residents, despite making up only 6% of Seattle’s population. 🤝🏾Benu Community Home’s work is more vital than ever. With Black families in Seattle earning, on average, less than half of the city’s annual median income, Benu’s services are crucial in bridging the gap and ensuring a more equitable future. 📄This event will also mark the official release of the Benu Community Home Impact Report, a milestone document that showcases the progress we’ve made in serving our community. The Report highlights our ongoing efforts to create meaningful opportunities and calls for increased commitment and action to bridge the racial equity gap in housing. Refreshments served. Registration gor this event is FREE. The Benu Report goes beyond statistics—it tells the story of lives transformed, dignity restored, and hope rekindled. Our data reflects not just the challenges we face, but the profound impact of our work: The significance of this Report lies in its focus on the human experience as it highlights how Benu Community Home is making a difference, not only by providing shelter but by creating a pathway to lasting change through empowerment and community support. As we prepare to celebrate the impact of Benu, we invite you to join us on September 7, 2024, for Benu Day, a celebration of community, impact, and the transformative work happening every day at Benu Community Home. #BlackWallStreet - Some of the most respected names in the Seattle Black business community came together last week at Byrd Barr Place in the #CentralDistrict for Africatown Community Land Trust’s Building Black Wall Street Mixer + Chat. The mixer was hosted by author Debrena Jackson Gandy and keynoted by Central District business icon, Lewis Rudd, co-founder of Ezell's Famous Chicken Chicken. Before the panel discussion began, ACLT President and CEO K. Wyking Garrett gave a historic overview of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma as well as the history of Black business in the Central District as well as insights as to what ACLT is currently doing to further develop a Black business district in the Central District and beyond. Next was the panel part of the evening and it was comprised of several distinguished Black business owners including Veronica Very of Wonder of Women Int’l, Damon Bomar of COMMUNION R&B , Rodney Hines of Métier Brewing Company, and Monika C. Mathews of QueenCare Products and was moderated by TV host Jay Martin Jr. from PBS. The panelist all shared some of their business journey especially the challenges they faced and how they overcame them as well as advice for up and coming entrepreneurs. Also in the building that night was Seattle City Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth who represents the Central District. Hollingsworth shared sobering numbers about the net worth of Black people in Seattle but also shared a collective vision how developing more Black owned businesses and creating more access to capital are key to turning those numbers around. The Building Black Wall Street Mixer + Chat was part of Africatown Community Land Trust’s Summer of Soul Series running through the summer of 2024 and includes events like Reunion on Union, Juneteenth, as well as UmojaFest.
