Last week, DFCD attended the Africa Impact Summit 2024 in Nairobi, #Kenya which brought together hundreds of participants from across the world to discuss the theme 📈 🌳 "Accelerating Action for the Africa We Want through Impact Investing." ➡ Our Origination Facility partners Wereld Natuur Fonds (WWF-NL) and SNV were well represented across the four days by Ian Isherwood, Vandana Thottoli and Tigere Muzenda. The summit underscored the critical need for innovative financing to support sustainable growth and climate resilience across the continent. 🗝 Key takeaways included: 🔹 Africa still captures just 3% of global sustainable investment flows, despite it being one of the most climate-vulnerable regions globally. With its investment needs projected at $2.8 trillion by 2030, discussions highlighted the urgency of mobilising private sector investments to meet Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. 🔹 Meanwhile, the UNDP Africa Investment Insights Report, launched at the summit, emphasised the many climate-related investment opportunities, with significant financial and SDG impact potential, based on market intelligence from 16 African SDG Investor Maps: https://lnkd.in/d53j5dfk 🔹 Discussions around "Strengthening Innovation Ecosystems in Africa" centered on fostering inclusive innovation and supportive environments for developing scalable businesses. 🔹 In the 'Access to Green Finance' sessions, Vandana Thottoli shared the work the DFCD is doing across Africa, which exemplifies the potential of climate finance to drive sustainable development (see SNV's most recent support of Johnvents Industries Limited here https://lnkd.in/epQBwSt4) ⛅ 🌱 While climate finance has risen to record levels across Africa and globally, it is still far from sufficient. It has been a week since the Africa Impact Summit held in Nairobi last week. A huge congratulations to the entire organising team led by Rosemary Amondi, special thanks for giving African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA) to be part of the summit. What struck me throughout the summit is the passion and intentionality of all the different individuals and organisations committed to impact in the countries and regions that they work in. Secondly, (and I never tire to say this) the opportunities that exist on the African continent and the untold stories of success that propel impact at scale. Thirdly, we understand the problems but there is an urgency to the actions of what needs to be done. Nothing beats meeting in person and shaking hands and hugging people whose names and faces that I had only seen on emails, zoom calls and webinars was amazing! I also had the pleasure of meeting many for the first time and hope to remain connected. It was a pleasure to speak at and attend the Africa Impact Summit 2024 in Nairobi.
