📸 Members of #AFCEA's leadership team gather for a group photo following a moving lunch speech by Cmdr. Kirk Lippold, USN (Ret.), who was serving as commander of the USS Cole when it came under a suicide terrorist attack by al Qaida in the port of Aden, Yemen, on October 12, 2000. The attack killed 17 sailors and wounded 37 others. Lippold delivered a moving speech Friday following a joint meeting of AFCEA's Executive Committee and Board of Directors. He detailed the sequence of events leading up to, during and the grueling hours following that horrible attack, punctuating his remarks with his perspective about strong leadership and the incredible efforts of his ship's crew that day to save the ship and save fellow sailors' lives. For Lippold, pillars of leadership include professional competence, making sound decisions, trusting your people and focus on mission, among others. "Today we reflect on the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and their aftermath, remembering the lives lost as well as our national commitment to homeland security. We all remember exactly where we were when the first twin tower was hit. The devastation still echoes in our memories. We continue to keep the thousands impacted in our thoughts. In 2024, our world continues to face serious threats, and AFCEA International remains committed to our mission of connecting people, ideas and solutions to ensure global security to our nation." - AFCEA President & CEO Susan Lawrence
